This was a significant part of the story because it shows the level of thought that Christopher puts into things, which tells much about who he is as a person. If Christopher naturally puts this much thought into everything, than I see why math comes so naturally. Additionally, I see why thinking logically comes so naturally, too. Christopher thinks thoughtfully about all of his decisions, and even plans out the criteria for having a good or bad day.

Additionally, this song could also speak to the betrayal that Christopher feels from his dad. Although Christopher has strong feelings right now, they will eventually pass and he'll feel better.
