Abundant Positive Energy

My introduction to Satch (and Pat) was in 1999 when my brother Tony and I took a trip from MN to WA to scope out my potential move to the Pacific Northwest. Tony is close friends with Patsy's nephew Nicholas and had taken a trip to visit the Siglers the year prior. Tony could not say enough about these people, and they soon became pivotal influencers in my world. Moving to WA included gaining an amazing friend in Stephanie and her incredible MN rooted parents who I (and my entire family) adopted spending time together for numerous holdiays and life events. I met my now husband Dave through the Siglers as Satch had a friend through teaching and birding (Dan) who's son he thought I should meet. We remind our two boys often (with deep gratitude) that their existence is endebted to Satch!

Over the years, what left the biggest impression on me was Satch's incredibly deep well of positive energy. He was always patient, kind, and truly interested in everything I (and everyone else) had to share. He was a creative force, always researching, building, and shaping something new. He had wonderful stories (family, teaching, sailing, MN, birding, wood working, exploring, etc) and a wealth of life experience from which to draw. To say I admired him is an understatement. What an incredible example of living and appreciating life to the fullest. ❤️

With Much LOVE and Deepest Gratitude,
Jill Svilar

I came to know (& love) Satch thru his oh so dear wife Pat, who I loved to call Patsy. And Dollie. And Cookie! It was during the last 4 1/2 years of her life.
He was unceasingly, truly extraordinarily, a reliable resevoir of calmness & positivity thru the many dire times. When grim news was dispensed, he somehow pried the positive particles out of it & kept the lights on. I witnessed that steadying force time & time again.
I am extremely fortunate to have received one of his hand-crafted rolling pens. #58. Which I shall evermore consider my new lucky number.
Blessed I was to have been a small, small piece of his circle. I got to soak up a big hunk of his goodness.
Rest in goodness & peace you fine, fine man.
And Big Fat Love to you dear Stephanie. You've sure got a lotta wonderful stuff coursing through your vessels.
(Debbie Exley, Anacortes friend)

To say that I idolized my big brother, Satch, is an understatement! He could do no wrong in my eyes and he never disappointed. He earned my admiration throughout his entire life in all that he said and did. Satch was one of the wisest and most ethical men I’ve ever known. He was a great influence, if not the greatest influence, on my life and who I would become.

Subconsciously, I believe my decision to attend Mankato State was because both Satch and Pat attended Mankato State. The trips to campus to see him in the play “Guys and Dolls” or to return him to McElroy Hall after a weekend in Le Sueur made a huge impression on me. Once I enrolled at Mankato State, my business classes were on the lower campus so when I walked through Main Hall, I knew I was walking in Satch’s footsteps.

Satch’s biggest influence on me, I believe, was his dedication to his students, the wisdom he shared, and his ethical decision making. While I worked in a university environment as an advisor, rather than a teacher, I kept in mind “What Would Satch Do?” I would never claim to be as effective in my career as Satch was, however, he set a standard that I tried to meet every day.

How lucky was I to have such a loving, engaging, and entertaining big brother? The depth of my loss is immense, however, my memories with Satch are numerous and so very rich. These memories will sustain me until we can meet again. Love you!

Pat's Prom, circa 1962. Pat's mom ordered this dress for Pat from the Sears catalogue. Pat broke the zipper when she put it on. Another lady up the road fixed it really quickly for Pat. Satch was in college and had a Guys and Dolls performance that night. Satch picked Pat up at 11:30pm, they only made it for 2 dances.

Satch was my oldest and dearest friend. We both grew up in Le Sueur, Minnesota, but didn’t meet until my freshman year at Mankato State College. Satch was our dorm counselor, and Dan, Satch's younger brother and my good friend growing up, thought Satch and I, with our shared love of the outdoors, might hit it off. So, shortly after settling in, I paid him a visit. I think his first words when I entered his dorm room were, “Pick a card...ANY card,” (he was doing card tricks for a roomful of other students at the time). Then he did some juggling. “It’s easy,” he said, and showed us how. Eventually I returned to my dorm room, thinking, “This guy is as weird as I am,” and, “I think I’m gonna LIKE college.”

Our shared passion was the out-of-doors. We spent the next half-century exploring the wild places—hunting, fishing, birding—first in Minnesota; then Washington, and then all over the place. Sometimes there'd be just the two of us, but often friends and family would come along, too. Some of our trips were to well-known destinations—Puerto Vallarta, the Everglades, Costa Rica, Kauai. But most were to places that were off the beaten path: San Blas (with our wives, on a guided birding trip); Bella Coola via the freedom highway (just Satch and me, exploring); Sheridan Lake B.C in late June for 20 years (trout fishing with friends); the deserts of southeast Arizona (birding); and, more recently, Tule and Lower Klamath Lakes (with our third birding “amigo," Dan Svilar).

We explored close to home, too. Every fall in the 70’s and 80’s would find us hunting grouse on the high ridges around Leavenworth, or driving the ditch roads near Quincy, hunting pheasants. In the winter we fished for steelhead on most of the legendary Washington rivers. Satch introduced me to surf fishing on Camano Island and smelt fishing at LaConner, and we even went out for Tuna once (and lived to tell about it!).

Satch was a problem-solver. He was curious about everything, and was always creating and innovating. E-mail was a perfect way for us to share discoveries and ideas. One of us would get fixated on some little thing (keeping house sparrows out of nest boxes, preparing the perfect bacon, identifying a “mystery bird"), and away we’d go. Or one of us would make some small but exciting (to us) discovery (ratchet belt buckles, chicken salad recipe, electric lawn mower) and we’d immediately have to share. “Save the best, change the rest,” was a maxim that Satch, who was also a great collector of quotes and sayings, shared with me on a hunting trip years ago, and that’s what we continually tried to do.

In terms of character, I have never known a finer human being. In all the time we spent together, sometimes in trying circumstance (that Tuna trip comes to mind!), I never saw him angry; never heard him complain; never heard him say a critical word about anyone. “What can I do to help? Here, let me give you a hand with that. Have you tried doing it this way—might be easier.” That was Satch. In his quiet way, he set the bar pretty high, and challenged the rest of us to follow.

Satch visited here twice in recent weeks, both times to bird with Dan and me. He had always wanted to see a Lazuli Bunting, and we finally managed to find him several—he even got photos. Our son, Pete, who had known Satch and Pat for his entire life, joined us for a meal during Satch's second visit. We all expected this to continue for many years—still trying to accept that it ended so suddenly and unexpectedly.

Satch and Pat are gone too soon, and profoundly missed. I am so very grateful for the many years we had together.

In June of 1967, Satch and Pat packed everything they owned in a 2 ton truck and drove it from Minnesota to Washington State. Colleen (Satch's sister) and Paulette (Pat's sister) are on the steps crying. They had to stop to put oil in a lot. They pulled a Volkswagen bug behind them. The fastest this truck went was 45 miles per hour. Satch and Pat had never been to Washington before this move. Two Le Sueur friends had come out to Washington previously.

Even fewer teachers' spouses strike up conversation with those former students whose names ring a bell, but Satch did, when I reached the high school.
My mom (being a quilter, like Pat, and a kayaker, like both of them) and I are so fortunate that these two wonderful, welcoming Creative Geniuses found spots for us on their social calendar over the course of 30 years. Those times, filled with sharing meals, recipes, Smores-making tips and travel stories - with genuine interest from both of them shining through - are as dear to us as the treasured keepsakes: rolling pins and a glue-gun caddy from Satch; scarves and letters from Pat. Thinking of them with love...Andrea McInnis & Connie McNamee

First Time I Met Satch

I was fortunate to meet Satch and Patsy for the first time when I was in High School. My best friend Nick invited me to stay at his incredible Aunt and Uncle's house and a chance to see our favorite baseball team the Seattle Mariners in person. While the baseball was fun to watch, the biggest impression left on me after that trip was meeting Satch and Patsy. Two of the kindest and most sincere people I had ever met in my life.

Satch took Nick and I crabbing for the first time. Such a fun experience and my first time ever eating fresh seafood. I've been hooked ever since!

My favorite memory of the trip though was our long discussions about education and teaching. Satch was very inspiring to me with his career choices and experiences. Little did I know at the time but his influence on me was a big reason why I decided to become a teacher later in my life. What an amazing impact both Patsy and Satch had on people. Now their impact on me is living on through my students which I do my best to inspire everyday.

Stephanie, your parents were amazing people and I'm so fortunate to have known them.

-Tony Wolverton

Satch's write up about this photo: This photo is easy—the night of May 15, 1957, my 15th birthday. That morning a bunch of us were taking written tests for driver’s ed scheduled that summer. We took the tests in the cafeteria on long tables. Sitting across the table from me was David Dobesh, who also lived across the street from us. After the test was over, we had some time to kill while we waited for our next class to begin. So I told David that I was going to go to the St. Anne’s Silver Dollar Social (bingo games) that night to win myself the $300 jackpot. I told him I couldn’t miss—I was 15 on May 15, and game 15 was a cover-all for the jackpot. He said he’d go along with me. We each bought two cards, a dollar for each card, I think. Well, the games leading up to the jackpot were just regular games, and neither one of us were doing well, and he was becoming more skeptical. I reminded him that 60 numbers were to be called for the jackpot cover-all, the 15th game, and I knew from past experience, someone was VERY likely going to win, and since I had all these 15’s lined up, it was going to be me. He didn’t seem as certain as I was. So in the jackpot game one of my cards showed early promise. I’d cover three or four numbers in a row. After several streaks like that, I was even more certain of the outcome. When I needed only four more numbers, everyone around us was getting excited. Finally, on the 58th number to be called, I needed one more number—I-21. Right on cue, the voice over the P-A system called out, “I-21!”David immediately jumped up from his seat and yelled, “Bingo! Bingo!” The rest of the players groaned loudly. I didn’t have to say a thing. A guy ushered me up to the stage; they confirmed the numbers on my card, and wrote me a check for $300.Now you need to know that Dad frequently volunteered to work these bingo games, but he wasn’t there that night. So needless to say, he and Mom were pretty surprised when I arrived home. Dad quickly got out his camera to record the event. I’m sure glad he did. The older I get, the more I realize how incredible it is that I predicted I’d win the jackpot that morning, and then it happened. The odds seem astronomical. I never entertained any ideas of big purchases with that money, but I did think I’d probably buy a watch. Mom and Dad said the wisest thing to do was put it in the bank… which I did.Years later, Dad was getting ready to buy a new Studebaker. He said he was going to trade in the green/yellow 1955 Studebaker. I told him I had hoped I would get it. I was a sophomore in college. After what seemed like a longer-than-necessary pause, he said, “OK, I’ll sell it to you.” “How much?” “$300.” Coincidence? I think not. :)

This might sound like a strange thing to say, but the three of us were immediately connected. From day one they touched my heart. The two of them showed such respect for each other and there was no question they were supporting each other as Pat dealt with cancer.
My regret is that we didn’t have more time together. They both left an empty space in my heart.
Darcy Wells

Steph, I wish I had a photo, but I don't think anything can add to this beautiful collection you already have. Among Satch's wonderful qualities was his ability to stay quiet at department meetings unless he had something vital to add. He never spoke just to put his own two cents in. Many times I'd walk into a meeting determined to "be like Satch" and just keep my mouth closed. I rarely followed through. And when he spoke, I listened.
Satch and Pat were such encouragers. I loved visiting them, sharing my current or recent knit/quilt projects and seeing theirs. I miss them both. Thank you for sharing this page, it's beautiful. --Sandy Eagon

Thu, Jun 18, 2020 at 11:06 AM
Subject: Re: Greetings
Bless your caring heart, Jane.

Thanks for reaching out and for being an integral part of our support system.

Stephanie and I are close and are adjusting very well. Pat would have expected nothing less. She coached me in the kitchen these past five years, and I’m applying those cooking skills daily. My favorites so far are a scrumptious chicken salad using Costco’s deboned rotisserie chicken available in two-pound packages; chicken divan, and yesterday morning I put an InstaPot recipe to work for rice pudding, adding raisins.

I start each day by making my bed, feeling ready to engage with whatever needs to be done. Since Stephanie is working from home during the virus precautions, we saw a need for a home improvement—heat pump/air conditioning. Her home office was overheating on the second floor above her garage. (I know, hard to believe with our recent cool weather.) She just completed Day 2 since it was installed and has quite a list of improvements in air quality, more consistent inside temperature—read that as cooler-- lower humidity (which she can adjust), and much cleaner air that circulates through a UV halo that knocks out bacteria, viruses, and cooking smells that used to linger in the house. Ditto the smell of smoke that escaped when she built a fire in her enclosed fireplace. After the first evening it was running, she woke up with less congestion and felt more rested and more energetic. The heat pump should meet her needs for about 10 or 11 months out of the year, but during colder weather, the compatible propane furnace will turn on and serve as backup. Savings on propane will pay for the system in time—it’s difficult to predict how long until we get more data over the next couple winters.

You may have a ground squirrel to enjoy, but here in Onamac a River Otter has caused a lot of damage by compromising crawl space vents and rearing young under a couple homes—$7500 damage at one home and $15,000 at another. Someone with a sense of humor posted an Otter Crossing sign near the Onamac entrance. Glad to hear Logan is recovering quickly, and fun hearing about Emil and Niko biking over to your place. Wishing you all the best, Jane, as you confront the medical challenges in front of you. Stare them down. Make ‘em blink before you do. I was very impressed with the creative finish that Jill applied to their table near the kitchen. What can’t she do??

I can share some bird photos; we made the Lazuli Bunting top priority and we encountered them about 10 times. Lazuli is pronounced LAZH-ya-lie. I drove my Hyundai Tucson, locked in AWDrive, and Bill, Dan, and I went a couple miles on a rough road to the north of the Swakane trail head. Sharp rocks! At one point, I was ready to focus on the beautiful dark blue back of a Lazuli Bunting—the only time I was above a Lazuli to see the back—when a target shooter let off about six rounds and scared it away. Turned out to be a responsible shooter with a ravine backstop about 50 yards around a corner from us, but I sure wish I could have recorded that Lazuli from that perspective. The bunting got its name from a blue gemstone called lapis lazuli “sky blue” and when it was ground into powder, famous artists like Vermeer would use it in their paintings. It was more expensive than gold in paint, perhaps because of its rarity. We didn’t encounter anything noteworthy after two miles, so we slowly got turned around on a very narrow road, and worked our way out. My best Lazuli photos came from that first one-mile stretch to the trailhead in Swakane.

Love to you and Mark~

Satch
