The Great Gatsby

"To young Gatz, resting on his oars and looking up at the railed deck, that yacht represented all the beauty and glamour in the world,"(Fitzgerald 100). Gatsby saw the perfect life as having wealth, status, and Daisy. By seeing another's wealth, Gatsby changed his whole life to get to that same position. This shows how the American Dream can be appealing, and what people are willing to do to achieve it.

This famous artwork shows a blind president leading his country, with dollar and percent signs buried in the ground. This painting was aimed to reflect the american dream, by conveying the idea that everything is about money, as well as the government being blindsided. This piece can be seen as portraying that the American Dream does not truly exist.

It reflects on all the possible outcomes of life in America, and how everyone has good opportunities. This artist believes that the American Dream is possible, you just have to work hard enough for it.

In the article "Is the American Dream even possible?", John Steinbeck describes his opinion on Americans and how they are hypocritical. Americans say they attain good qualities and morals, but their actions do not reflect those qualities. This creates a paradox and shows that Americans have a dream of what they want to be, in which Steinbeck believes, "the fact that we have this dream at all is perhaps an indication of its possibility."

This article written by an immigrant affairs manager, dives into the struggles of immigrants in their journey to achieve the American Dream. First generation immigrants face many challenges, as they are taken advantage of through insurance companies and they may have an inability to communicate. Achieving the American Dream is possible for immigrants, they just encounter more challenges along the way.

This piece by the name of "Shocking Awe" displays the idea of what happens when America is in war and conflicts. Civilians sit at home as the other countries, or their own get destroyed. The American Dream is a self centered ideology, due to the people only focusing on themselves.

"His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people-his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all,"(Fitzgerald 98). Gatsby grew up with nothing, and he was not very fond of his parents. He changed the whole outlook of his life, which he did in an illegal way, but it proves that achieving the American Dream/wealth is possible from any point of status.

After a long time, all his hard work finally payed off, and he got us to where we are today. I wouldn't necessarily say that he achieved the American Dream, but I also wouldn't necessarily say that he didn't.

It's difficult to tell exactly what happened, but at the beginning of the story the father is passing down a lot of his money to his son. Then later on, the son is using his money on his family.

I have learned that most of the sources are opinion based, but there was some statistical evidence. I think it is a very interesting topic to cover, as there are many different viewpoints on all of the driving questions. I have seen that most people used evidence pointing to the American Dream being unachievable. There are barriers for other minorities that I looked more into through my peers padlets, which added to my understanding of the obstacles to achieving the American Dream. The appeal of the American Dream is still in the same place in my mindset because everyone had the same viewpoint on that driving question.
