A significant moment in Act One, Scene Three is that Lady Capulet is going to her daughter and informing her of Paris's proposal. Juliet is not enthused by the idea of marriage, but her mother tries to persuade her to consider Paris, and what he has to offer. She also explains to her daughter that ladies of her age are already wed, and mothers too. This moment is significant, because it is opening Juliet up to the idea of getting married. Although she later describes Paris as a Toad, the conversation between her and her mother is important because they discuss choices, and the option to marry, as well as what to look for in a husband (such as status and wealth.)

Lady Capulet to Juliet: "Well think of marriage now. Younger than you/ Here in Verona, ladies of esteem,/ Are made already mothers. By my count/ I was your mother much upon these years/ That you are now a maid. Thus, then, in brief;/ The valiant Paris seeks you for his love"(39).

Topics: Marriage, Adolescent Agency
