Jimi Hendrix was the first well-known recording artist to combine the rhythms and riffs of early funk to his rock sound. In the early 1990s, several bands combined funky rhythms with heavy metal guitar sounds, resulting in "funk metal", where the emphasis is in using much heavier distorted guitar sounds in the mix.

The typical lyrical content/ themes in songs of this genre

Unlike many earlier styles of popular music, rock lyrics have dealt with a wide range of themes in addition to romantic love: including sex, rebellion against "The Establishment", social concerns and life styles. The lyrical content within a rock based song will depend on the theme, however stereotypically the lyrical content within a rock song would tend to be more aggressive or violent as these are conventions of the rock genre. Although the hybrid genre I have chosen is blues, funk and rock and therefore this will impact the lyrical content as it isn't a rock genre song. A good example of a funk rock band is the Red Hot Chili Peppers, although their music is similar to our chosen track there is still a slight difference as the track we have chosen by 3rd Rock Revolution has a more base instruments compared to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The typical audience is 18-45 year olds as this is more of an abstract music video which appeals to this age group and attracts them to the promo.

Example of a Funk Rock band - Can't stop by Red Hot Chili Peppers

This video is a performance based music video, this is typical of the funk rock genre and therefore this band adheres to this convention. Within Andrew Goodwin's theory this music video would be classed as disjuncture as what's happening within the video has no link to the lyrical content. They got their inspiration from the one minute sculptures of Erwin Wurm for this music video, this made the promo unique and more abstract. In this music video the band are represented as having tattoos and long black hair, this adheres to the stereotypical rock band look/ image. The fact that the main singer is wearing black leather trousers tells the audience that they are a rock band as black leather clothing is usually associated with the rock genre. At the start of this music video crescendo is used this excites the audience and makes them more interested. This music video subverts the typical conventions of a rock music video because it is more abstract and uses the element of art to make it stand out, the colours and the use of art is not usually associated with this genre and therefore makes them stand out more and makes them different from other rock bands. During the performance within the video drums and guitars are used this links to the representation of funk rock bands as these instruments are typically used within this genre. The lyrical content and overall sound of the music subverts the rock genre as it doesn't sound like a typical rock song as it is not as fast paced as a rock song and it also has a basey sound to the song which adheres to the funk rock genre. For example compared to Green Day's American Idiot the sound of the music is different as their song is more in your face with electric guitars and loud drums whereas Red Hot Chili Peppers' sound has more base and is less in your face.

Musical style/ characteristics of the Funk Rock genre

Funk rock is a fusion of funk and rock. Many instruments may be incorporated into the music, but the overall sound is defined by a definitive bass or drum beat and electric guitars. The bass and drum rhythms are influenced by funk music but with more intensity. Can't stop by Red Hot Chili peppers has an upbeat track which subverts the typical sound of a rock song, this song have the overpowering sound of the instruments, the vocals are the main focus in the sound. This song has a slower pace but does also feature an electric guitar solo which is a common feature in rock songs so therefore this adheres to a typical rock song. It is clear to the audience that this song has a mixed genre of rock and funk as it adheres to some particular conventions but also subverts some conventions as well.
