On September 8, 1863 at 6:00 am, Union boats sailed into Sabine Pass and were equipped with guns and cannons ready to fire. The Union came with the intention to reduce Fort Griffin and to land Union troops in Texas. The confederate soldiers were sent to Fort Griffin as a punishment and would practice firing attirllery into a target on the lake. This gave the confederacy a major upperhand when the Union sailed in. The confederacy decided to capture the Union's boat and took the men aboard the ship into imprisonment. The confederacy won.
