The Union came with the intention to reduce Fort Griffin and to land Union troops in Texas. The confederate soldiers were sent to Fort Griffin as a punishment and would practice firing attirllery into a target on the lake. This gave the confederacy a major upperhand when the Union sailed in. The confederacy fired cannons in an effort to sink the ship.The union managed to dismount their cannon during a return fire. The man in command of the troops called a four day truce and evacuated  his men to the mainland. The Union continued to hold the harbor. The rest of the the battle was filled with hostile threats and not much occurred. The first step was assembling an army in El Paso, Texas and marching to California and New Mexico. On February 21, 1862, The march began. Once capturing two towns in Arizona and an attempt to siege Fort Craig, the confederates were meant by the union five miles north Fort Craig and began to battle. The Union suffered greatly after losing 68 men and 160 wounded.
