Odysseus, the hero in the "Odyssey", was said to have ruled one of the western islands. 

Almost 1000 years before Odysseus would have lived, a sophisticated society called the Minoan Civilization developed on Crete. 

In about 1450 B.C, the Minoans collapsed and the Mycenaeans took power over Greece. The Mycenaeans originated in mainland Greece and moved south into Crete. 

The Trojan War was around 1200 B.C. and has become one of the most famous military ventures.

In the Greek dark years tree hundred years writing disappeared but in 850 B.C. there was a economic boom resurgence of arts and the poems of Homer.

After Homers time Greek civilzatation grew more organized.
Sparter was the military prowess and Athen was the birthplace of democracy.
