Magna Carta

In feudal times, monarchs reigned by divine right. People had only rights that their monarch chose to grant them. In fact King John of England had violated a number of laws and in 1215 his barons rebelled against him and forced him to sign the Magna Carta, a document which lists a number of rights and freedoms that we now consider basic human rights. However the document wasn’t revolutionary, because it was written to protect the rights of the noblemen, not of the common people. It wasn’t even very successful, because the king didn’t keep his promises and soon he and the barons were fighting each other again.

Magna Carta is considered the most important early constitution to the establishment of constitutional law in English-speaking countries and some clauses are still valid today. The most important one is the number 39, which said that the king couldn’t imprison any free man without a fair trial, that’s the origin of habeas corpus. Magna Carta also inspired the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948, and the European Convention on Human Rights, signed in 1950 by all member states of the Council of Europe.

The rule of law

The United Nations Organisation was created in 1945, an important date because in this period the world was troubled by the World War II. The UNO was based on three pillars:

-international peace and security

-human rights

-development

It means that everyone respect and obey laws that are publicly promulgated and equally enforced, and the respect of international human rights norms and standards. The rule of law is fundamental to international peace and security, and political stability, to achieve social and economic progress and development, to protect people’s rights and freedoms. The law contrast corruption and limits the abuse of power.

Agenda 2030

Sustainable development goals 16 (peace, justice and Strong institutions) encourages members of state of the United Nations to generate changes in national policies that contribute to progress on other SDGs. This approach must pay particular attention to people who are often marginalised or left behind. Sustaining peace combining politics, security, development, human rights and gender equality. The rule of law involves respect for the norms on the use of force, and recognition of the primary responsibility pf the states to protect their populations from genocide, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing and war crimes. It also includes the proliferation of hate speech and incitement to violence; violence extremism; climate changes and environment problems; the complexities of artificial intelligence and cybercrime.

But we’ll be able to complete the objective of the Agenda 2030?

Personally, I don't believe that the objectives of the agenda will be achieved by 2030, but everyone must contribute to making the world a better place
