Our perspective in life is molded by our experiences and knowledge. For instance, in a book written by Shakespeare, The Tempest, Miranda, a fifteen-year-old girl falls in love with a young man who crashed on the island. This was inevitable because she had never met a boy her age before. Due to her limited perspective and lack of any other reference points, her expectations were also low. Experience is the primary source of knowledge, as it expands and shapes our perspective.

Knowledge + Power

Status doesn't always equate to power or control. An example of this can be found in Shakespeare's play, The Tempest. In the play, a boat with sailors and royalty on board is put in a storm. Although the royals held power among humans, it was the sailors who possessed the necessary knowledge to keep everyone alive, giving them power. Furthermore, it is the power of the sailors acquired through their experience and knowledge, that allows them to navigate through the storm. The storm represents nature and its unpredictability, and ultimately unstoppable by humans.

To illustrate this point outside the book, imagine that you have only had SPAM and canned food your whole life, and then you are introduced to authentic Mexican food. You would fall in love with Mexican food because it is a new and unique experience for you, broadening your perspective. However, if you grew up with an expanded perspective on food, you would find authentic Mexican food good but would have other things to compare it to.

Act 2 Theme: Perpective

Thesis Statement: People who are desperate and/ or have a limited or flawed perspective, can be easily manipulated.

Evidence: These be fine things, an if they be not/ sprites. That’s a brave god and bears celestial liquor./ I will kneel to him./ [He crawls out from under the cloak]/[to Trinculo] (2.2.120-124)

Elaboration: This scene is when Caliban follows Trinculo because he has wine, and isn't dictating his every move. His previous master treated him like a slave. Therefore, he was naturally prone to following any other person who treated him decent, even if their morals weren't good.

Act 3 Theme:

Thesis Statement:

When someone is full of anger and hate, their perspective is clouded.

Elaboration: Prospero's perspective and motive have changed from creating justice to seeking revenge against Antonio and Alonzo for what he did because he is filled with anger. This clouded perspective is fed by anger, which causes Prospero to avenge them rather than be fair and just.

Evidence:

Thee of thy son, Alonso,/ They have bereft; and do pronounce by me/ Ling’ring perdition, worse than any death/ Can be at once, shall step by step attend (3.3. 93-96).

Elaboration: In this text, Prospero has kidnapped his son, and has stranded them on this island under his control. He essentially is repaying a sin for a sin and is as bad as his enemies. Originally, Prospero comes across as a kind person who cares for his daughter and learns more. However, as we read more, he seems very power-hungry and often belittles others.
