by Karen Hesse

One in the Dear America series written from a child's perspective. Set at a lighthouse on Fenwick Island, Delaware during the Civil War, this book is a useful historical fiction resource. My 5th graders enjoy narratives featuring kids their own age and this series manages to slip in some useful history.

by John Lithgow

Farkle is amazingly talented but sadly cannot decide which musical instrument to stick with. As with other works by Lithgow, Farkle McBride has humor, rhyme and lilt. It's a fun read and even more fun to listen to Lithgow read it on YouTube. I plan to use it during my Sound Unit in Science as well as for context clues, poetry, onomatopoeia, adjectives and adverb lessons and activities.
