Brave New World depicts a Utopian society called the World State in which every aspect of it is controlled and perfected. In many ways, the United States is becoming more like the World State. Regardless, in some aspects it remains the same and traditional values are still important.

Can’t you see?’ He raised a hand; his expression was solemn. ‘Bokanovsky’s Process is one of the major instruments of social stability!’” (Huxley 7).

Q#2: “People are happy; they get what they want, and they never want what they can’t get. They’re well off; they’re safe; they’re never ill; they’re not afraid of death; they’re blissfully ignorant of passion and old age; they’re plagued with no mothers or fathers; they’ve got no wives, or children, or lovers to feel strongly about; they’re so conditioned that they practically can’t help behaving as they ought to behave. And if anything should go wrong, there’s soma” (Huxley 220).

Q#3: “‘Othello’s better than those feelies.’ ‘Of course it is,’ the Controller agreed. ‘But that’s the price we have to pay for stability. You’ve got to choose between happiness and what people used to call high art. We’ve sacrificed the high art. We have the feelies and the scent organ instead”’ (Huxley 220).

Q#4: ‘“What about self-denial, then? If you had a God, you’d have a reason for self denial.” “But industrial civilization is only possible when there’s no self-denial. Self indulgence up to the very limits imposed by hygiene and economics. Otherwise the wheels stop turning” (Huxley 237).

Analysis

In the novel Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, the aspects of sacrificing for social stability and being controlled and conditioned can be seen in our current world. The quotes provided from the novel support the aspect of making sacrifices for social stability. These sacrifices can be seen in the social caste system that the novel forges. In the novel they create a caste system that involves lower and upper tier with high genetic editing and conditioning since birth to ensure their place in society. They make the lower tiers do the grunt work and the higher tiers to the intellectual work. They create an atmosphere of no emotions and drugs to take away people's free will. They also take away the ideals of god and believing in something because it will stop the “wheel”.

Throughout the novel, people make certain decisions that are controlled by their desire to seek pleasure. People will have meaningless sex with whoever they desire and drink soma for their own entertainment and pleasure. When people in the World State do not immediately satisfy their desires, they become upset and turn to drinking soma. Soma is there so that people in the World State do not become dissatisfied with their conditions and circumstances. They were conditioned to fulfill their immediate desires so that they would not be unhappy and would be easily manipulated into following the orders and expectations of the World State. This is similar to the current world in which people seek to gratify their own desires and needs without measuring consequences on themselves or on others around them. For example, people in today’s society will prioritize their own needs by being selfish and greedy with their emotions, time and money.

These aspects about control and sacrifices instability can be connected to our world and how it's becoming more like the World State. Immigrants in this country are not being helped as much as they could be and are subdued to work the lower class jobs and live in conditions that make it harder for them to escape and rise.
