Recently, Discord has updated itself to a new font, titled GG Sans. The font is obviously a sans-serif, as you can tell by the title, but was specifically fixed due to readability issues. Some people have already had issues with the font and the drastic change from Whitney, the old font, to GG Sans. Even from this example, there are some things that irk me. The bar on the T's being connected kind of rubs me the wrong way. That, along with the finial [the little curve at the bottom] of the lowercase L looks like the biggest change. Other than that, not much looks different otherwise.

Here is a screenshot of the game Yakuza 0, one that's very near and dear to me! As you progress from objective to objective, your next goal appears on the screen like in the screenshot. I actually ended up finding the name of this font, it's called Edo! It's clearly a handwriting font, meant to replicate the stroke of an ink brush. You can tell from the texture at the ends of the stroke, and little touches like the crossbar of the A being out of line. It fits with the grungy, underground crime feeling of the game to have a roughly textured but legible and straightforward font. The thickness of the lettering matches up with this idea as well.

Here, we're going to look at the font of Splatoon. Specifically, we'll be looking at the font you see most often on this screen, not the one on the side of the screen or at the bottom. This is a screenshot of Splatoon 3, but this bouncy and playful font has stuck around since the first iteration, which says a lot about its look and how it's never changed. To a fan like me, it's easy to recognize. The midline on this font is pretty low, which means that the letters are very top heavy. This effect is consistent throughout all the letters, from the thick bar on the T in "Status" to the tiny counter of the O in "Season." This effect achieves a good balance between being stylized and legible, even while being top-heavy. It is a fun, bouncy looking font that fits well with the playful and "fresh" feeling of Splatoon's world!

ENTRY 4- The Art Deco Fantasy of Skullgirls

Today, we're looking at Skullgirls' main font, which oozes personality and charisma. Skullgirls itself is a fighting game in a dark environment with classic film flavoring and slick art deco flair. You can see it from the patterning of the screen alone, but the font is what immediately clues you in. It's thin and sleek, but still manages to look decorative without much flashiness. However, some parts of the font, I will admit, look a little illegible or "clunky." I think the large counter of the O sets it apart from the rest of the letters, creating a pretty large break in space. It feels sort of foreign when it's not following that tall and thin style the other letters have. The midline is also uneven on several letters, meaning some legs on letters like N are wayyy longer than those on letters like A and R. These aren't too egregious, in my opinion- I barely noticed it when I was playing and only realized how uneven some of them were when looking at them in the context of typography.

Here we're going to look at the title and logo for the noir point and click adventure game, The Wolf Among Us. One of the most notable things about this logo at first glance is the way the words themselves are arranged. They're cutting into each other, with several letters being connected. I think the fact that the font is a clean sans-serif lends itself well to being readable, even when it's both connected and broken at the same time. Many of the strokes, like the prongs of the F and the crossbar of the A, come to a point instead of being flat. I think this works when establishing the mood of the game itself- everything is seemingly normal, but things are not only askew and connected at the same time, but sharp and threatening as well.

Much media around Eastern Europe and Russia has a specific type of font replicating the type used in infamous times where history changed in those countries. The game Papers Please is no different. You play as a passport inspector at the fictional Arstotskan border checkpoint, with the game have a dreary, oppressive feeling especially near the end. With that in mind, the title font itself conveys this perfectly. A bold and thick font, the title is in 3D, giving the effect that it's made out of gray blocks. This effect, in my opinion, helps solidify that oppressive mood. They almost look like they're made out of concrete, representing the harsh working conditions and troublesome conditions you'll be introduced to upon playing the game.

Entry 7- Black Fidelity and My Theory Behind Modern Fonts

Here is a flyer for Black Fidelity, what seems to be a fashion show for black creators in the Richmond area. Upon first glance, it took me a minute or two to actually realize what it had said, especially the "fidelity" part. It's definitely meant to be a very slick and clean looking font, with the shines on the tops of the letters giving it a trendy chrome effect. The top bar of the F and the top bar of the T are one, which while creative, looks a little confusing. The dot on the I is also connected to the lower bar of the T, which makes it a little more hard to read as well. I think personally that modern fonts are beginning to cross the threshold of "barely legible". However, I think this in itself is a clever marketing tactic- curious people will see the sign and inspect it closely to examine what it says. Therefore, you get more people looking at the flyer!

In this entry, we’re looking at the logo for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It’s a simple life-sim game where you craft and live amongst cute animals. It's obvious, then, that the layout for the font feels so friendly. The font is a serif, but the serifs themselves are blocky and consistent with the line weight of the entire font. They don't taper off into points like other serif fonts like Times New Roman, for example. As a result, it feels more cozy and less serious or elegant. The letters themselves are arranged in a slightly scattered way, but it doesn't feel frenzied- as a matter of fact, I feel like it makes it feel homemade. I think the tail on the G is especially friendly- it ends in a playful looking curl. The colors are also worth mentioning in my opinion, being in a warm yellow definitely adds to how cheerful and welcoming it feels.

This is a drawing pad from the company Strathmore. In my years as an art student and making the shift from purchasing "low-quality" art materials to higher quality, I've noticed that many "high-quality" brands use elegant and classy serifs. Strathmore is one example, but companies like Faber-Castell use a serif as well. In the greater scope of the world, serif fonts that fit in the Didone style are used often for high class or high quality brands. Vogue, Cartier, and Christian Dior are only some of the many brands that use serifs. I wonder how this came to be...

Tetris is a pretty classic game. It's one that even my mom knows, and she's not very tech savvy at all! Fun block stacking and catchy music along with easy gameplay and an endless gameplay loop makes Tetris a superstar of early games. Tetris 99 is a revamp on the classic game, turning it into a battle royale where you battle against 99 other players to get to the top! Here is the logo for the title screen for Tetris 99. It's a spin off of the classis Tetris logo, now replacing the letters with the same color and shading as the Tetrominoes [the tetris blocks]. Other than that, there's no changes to the actual shape of the font itself, keeping itself readable and iconic. I think it's a fun and fresh way of revitalizing the font while also keeping it relatively similar. There's been online backlash before about iconic logos or titles being changed to fit with the times, but I think this is a perfect revamp.

This is a banner for Dead By Daylight on Steam. Dead by Daylight is an asymmetrical horror game where 4 survivors try to escape from 1 powerful killer. That being said, I think the font displayed here makes absolutely no sense! It's very straight and clean, which I think makes so sense for the game itself. The environment of the game consists of grungy and abandoned buildings or structures, and the game has a lot of texture. When you consider all this, I think a font that would match is something equally as gritty, one that matches the logo that's right next to it! It'd be so easy to create something like that, I don't understand why they chose to hold back instead of leaning wholeheartedly into the horror aspect.

I noticed recently that these two soaps from the same brand have different fonts as their logo. On the left, this has a bit of handwriting flair, looking a lot like it's from a fountain pen. It tapers off the end of each stroke, giving it a clean and elegant look. On the right, the stroke is very even and round. Even the "o"'s look rounder than on the left, where if you look closely, they're slightly oblong. On the right, the crossbar of the "f" is connected to the "t" as well. I feel like this image represents a shift in design philosophy as time continues. More and more companies change their fonts everyday to something softer, rounder and especially with flatter colors and dimension.

In Slime Rancher, you play as Beatrix Lebeau, a girl on a far off planet who, well, ranches slimes! I think this stylized font immediately establises the game's identity, what it will be about, and what you're seeing immediately. The dot of the "i" is a pink slime, the first slime you see within the tutorial of the game and one that you'll be seeing quite often as you continue playing. The letters themselves are stylized to look like flying strings of slime, which represents your main form of transporting slimes to your ranch- vaccuuming them up and then firing them wherever they need to go! This is also, in my opinion, an example of how some games won't really use an actual font for their title, but rather give it an illustrative aspect which I like. That being said, there's obviously typographical choices being made, like a thin vs. thick lettering.

They serve wraps and quesadillas and their food is so good, I buy it for myself whenever I think I deserve a treat. Anyways, enough drooling about their food! Like a lot of food places, this is a slab serif font. However, the lettering itself is pretty thin which I think is pretty interesting when you consider that most slab serifs are really thick and heavy looking. It has a really playful and stylized feeling to it, which makes it stand out and makes me like it a lot. What I think is interesting is how most of the word is green. Historically, food chains use colors like red, yellow, brown, etc in their signs and in their interiors to make people hungry and draw them to their restaurant. The "Bo" is red, but the "dillaz" isn't. I actually like this distinction! I think it gives it a lot of personality and sets it apart from the chains around it.

I mentioned in the Slime Rancher entry that some games, instead of using a font for their title, take a more illustrative aspect to their titles. This is Stardew Valley's title, and it's taken the exact same direction! In Stardew Valley, you inherit your grandpa's farm after becoming tired of your desk job. You tend the land, explore, forage, and build. The font is made out of nailed-together planks and leaves, giving it a very natural and homemade feel. Obviously, it's suspended in disbelief a little- I've never seen a piece of wood curve the way that it does on letters like the "s", the "r", etc. But I actually do like the curve rather than, for example, planks nailed together making a point. The curves make it feel way more cozy and it works well with the texture of the wood as well. I also really enjoy the leaves, being an interesting pop of color and breaks up the shapes in a neat way.

ENTRY 16- Crayola and What Kids Like [And The Effect of Nostalgia]

Here we have a very classic title, Crayola. Crayola's known for being a good place for small term art supplies that are mostly meant for kids. I think thye're still good, though, and I use a lot of their products even for serious traditional work. Anyways, this font is very very simple. There are very slight serifs on the ends of the "r" and the tops of the "a". It's a small thing, but it adds variety between the letters in a way that doesn't make them extremely different. As far as I remember, the design of Crayola's logo is simple and consistent, and hasn't changed in the almost 20 years I've been alive and been purchasing their products. One thing I really enjoy about Crayola is how friendly and perfect for kids it is. The rounded letters make it distinct and easily readable for kids, making them more likely to point it out on store shelves. It's also recognizable for adults as well, and the kids that grew up using Crayola products are now growing up and having kids of their own. Having the brand be easily recognizable and making no changes invokes nostalgia in adults and makes them want to purchase it as well.

Inscryption is a video game that is seemingly small on the surface, and is about a spooky card game in a pixelated style. As a result, I feel like this title works well to tell you about what you're getting into. The text is very subtle, there's not much flair to it beyond having some serifs that give it a fantasy feel. The slightly scattered letters also give it a flavoring of spookiness or unsettling dread. What's most noteworthy in the text is the pixelated effect. The letters themselves are made of individual pixels, matching the game's entire style. But there's most that you understand as you continue to play. The Y in the very center of the word appears to have blood dripping from its tail. Under the word "crypt", you can see this blood drips down into a purple whisp-y effect. This blood is a reference to the actual way the game is played. When a card is either sacrified voluntarily or felled in battle, you obtain blood tokens, which you can use to play stronger cards onto the field. I think this is a really subtle but nice touch that they could have easily left out. But that bit of detail really highlights the thought put into the many layers of the game, down to the lettering of the title.

This is the title banner for the game Detroit Become Human. It is a choose your own adventure game set in the future. In the future, androids have been created, robotic humans who are built to serve different purposes from detective work to nannies to laborers. As opposed to games set in a current time period or in the past, the future doesn't have a concrete basis in what it will look like or how trends will continue in the future era. As a result, in order to create the font or type for a setting such as this, you need to look at the changes being made now and then predict how they will progress. You can see here that the developers have predicted that the modern, spindly geometric fonts will continue to be popular as far as the game takes place (in the year 2038.) While not touching on the main point, I do want to express my love for something that seems obvious to include but I still enjoy: The O in "Detroit" is the LED present on the heads of all androids, which makes sense for a story in which every playable character is an android.

While simple, the title for Risk has some flair that makes me smile. Risk is a somewhat simple game in which you assemble troops and attempt to claim as much territory as possible on your map, with the end goal being defeating all of your opponents (who are also creating armies of their own) and claiming the entire board. It plays similarly to the old strategy game Waterloo. It is pretty obvious now why the "R" in Risk would have a horse and it's rider valiantly holding a flag billowing in the wind. The way the horse and rider are styled is also done with care: the flag is made to look like the counter of the R, and the horse and rider represent the space between the legs of the R. In my opinion, it's pretty well done and not jarring at all. The rest of the title is a simple slab serif, which makes sense for a fairly simple game. There's little flair to the game itself, which makes sense that the title itself is so simple.

Transistor is a gorgeous story based game where you play as Red, a singer who's lost her voice after being attacked by the Camarata, a crime family who believed she overstepped her boundaries. She wields the Transistor, a large sword that has the capability to alter parts of the city she lives in. Throughout the game, you plug in the Transistor to different pillars to gain different abilities. The title itself is a relatively simple sans serif, but the illustrative aspects around it make it really interesting and lovely. I enjoy the distinction they create between the letters and the ring around them. It's a very thin line that establishes they're not connected, but that in itself looks very pretty. The shine effect they also create with the colors on the lettering is what makes the font beautiful as well. I also enjoy the symmetry they create with the word with using the circle.

This is the banner for Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. The game surrounds a group of exceptional high schoolers who are trapped in a school and are forced to kill each other to get a chance to escape. Something that I really enjoy about this font is that it's entirety on a slant, which I feel like is something you rarely see. It makes it distinct from other titles which choose to be rightside up and symmetrical. My favorite part of this is the stylization of the dot on the I. Most of the letters are connected, making the dot on the I something that would break from the other words in the format. However, instead of it being a simple dot, they turned the dog into a crosshair. This is a tie-in to the main point of the game- when you investigate and then interrogate people, you gain "bullets" as evidence and shoot people's false statements. I think this is better than to create a simple dot. Like Detroit Become Human as previously mentioned, it's something that seems pretty obvious, but adding it just gives it extra charm.

Cattails is a pixel adventure game where you play as a cat living in the wild. And everything about this title is blocky and pixelated. Without the context of it being a pixel-style game, it'd be confusing why a nature based game has such a blocky and heavy font, as opposed to something thin and in handwritten script. In this way, the developers took risks in thinking about how to establish a first impression. While something like a script feels closer to nature, I like how they have extra flair on the most boring letter [the I] with a pixelated cutout of, well, cattails! They also have the addition of the cat walking over the letters, which I think is a lovely touch. Something that's a little strange is the S, which isn't as symmetrical or as stable as the other letters, which really feel block-like and stable. But other than that, I think this font and this title is really well done and introduces you to the identity of the game in an easy way.

The font is a sharp looking serif, which I think fits the unsettling mood. It tells you that Razputin is going to face danger, along with the alternating sizes and the slightly scattered lettering. The letters being slightly out of place is something that we've seen often, like with Inscryption. Both games have similar ominous tones to the game. Something small that I enjoy is the color of the letters itself [green and chartreuse stripes] is the same pattern as Razputin's sweater. Another addition is the blue glow around the lettering, making the word feel really supernatural. This meshes well with the already established tone of spookiness.

Them's Fightin Herds is a fighting game where every character is an ungulate [that is to say, they all have hooves!] Something that is very subtle but I really enjoy about the logo to begin with is the 7 stars at the top: one to represent each character currently in the roster. The entire shape or emblem of the logo, in my opinion, looks like something you'd see in wrestling, which makes sense for a fighting game. The bars on the F and the N create framing for the the actual title. Not only is this a very nice touch, it gives me more feelings of this looking like an emblem or the intricate buckle on a wrestling belt. The logo itself has points and a roughly established edge, which I think adds to the rough and tumble nature of the fighting game itself. Some other fighting games have a more elegant and classy feeling, but this one leans hard into the violent feeling of fighting games. However, the lettering isn't too harsh, which meshes well with the cartoony look of the game as a whole.

With a gorgeous yet simple title, Firewatch has you playing as Henry, a man who has taken a job at a fire lookout tower in Shoshone National Forest. The emblem in the center, similar to Transistor, is simple but adds a lot to the overall tone of the game. You see this emblem often as you work as a fire lookout throughout the game. Other than that, this is a blocky and geometrical font that is very clean. It doesn't taper harshly and I actually really enjoy how polished it looks. This font is not only present in the title, but many signs you see in the Shoshone have the same font and overall look, albeit with their letters faded or slightly roughened up from several years in the wilderness. Here, however, all the edges are very crisp and the texture of the letters has a subtle but very pretty texture that looks both like stamped ink or charring on a surface. Either way you see it, it's a simple but gorgeous title for an equally beautiful game.

The game, as you can see, is painfully cute, and has very simple text for its title. I feel like an obvious thing that was missed was creating the O's into donuts, but the game itself isn't entirely about donuts but rather about the sinkholes, so I understand why they made that choice. Additionally, I like how the letters are slightly askew, how they look as if they're tumbling or falling. It's got simple colors and is a simple blocky font, but all of that makes sense when you consider how simple the style of the entire game is. All in all, Donut County's text style is sweet and playful and fits the game wonderfully.

Knockout City itself is an extremely fun game where you play competitive dodgeball in teams of three, all while navigating city streets. Knockout City is all about style and freshness, with a variety of fresh clothing and emotes to show off your own personal style. You can clearly get the message from the stylized logo itself that this game is bombastic and full of energy! Having the O as a dodgeball is a very nice touch, but I especially love the leg of the K creating the impact lines on the ball. Like many of the fonts we've already gone over, Knockout City's logo is much more illustrative than being an actual font. But again, as I've said, the illustrative fonts allow for a lot more personality from their games than simple text. But even the text in itself has a lot of flair, being chunky and uneven, but in a way that still allows it to be legible.

Little Nightmares is a horror game where you play as a tiny girl in a raincoat trying to escape off a boat filled with people trying to catch you. This game is extremely scary, and I think the font used here is an excellent way of keying you in that the game is going to be scary. For one, making the word "little" actually smaller that the rest is an obvious choice, but I'm not knocking it. It's a good choice! The "Nightmares" is made out of spindly, long, thin strokes that are uneven and kind of warped. The "R" especially is my favorite letter, the uneven legs and the way it almost feels like it's kind of twisting is a really good effect. It has the same effect that I tried to channel way earlier in the semester with the "type has meaning" project with my word, Shiver.
