1. Example of a symbol essay question:
A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.

One symbol in this short story was the white quail that Mary saw in her garden. At first she was amazed when she saw this quail, but then she immediately became very protective over it. All she cared about was protecting this quail. This act of security then led to her character being classified as protective over this symbol of innocence. When Harry kills this quail, it symbolizes the act of reality killing this sign of innocence that she had, and therefore her character had.

She is constantly wanting her husband to do things for the garden and is never content when the work is finished. When something is wrong in the garden such as the cat being in the garden she wants to kill the cat even though the husband is not willing to do that. The garden symbolizes a constant need for change in the story and reveals that Mary is not content and in love with her partner.

The cat in "The White Quail" is a symbol for danger, or a general threat. The cat represents a threat to Mary's garden. Mary knew the cat would scare away the birds, and later the White Quail that she saw, ruining the peace in the garden. She wanted Harry to kill the cat so that it wouldn't ruin her garden's peace. At the same time, the way Harry goes about dealing with the cat, also makes him a threat to the garden's peace. He is asked to kill the cat so it won't hurt the white quail, and he says he'll shoot the cat, but what he does instead is kill the quail. That way the cat won't come back and ruin the garden's peace, however, now the quail won't come back and give Mary the peace it symbolized to her either. This creates guilt in Harry, since he know's he's solved the issue of a real threat to the garden, but now he's ruined the peace it brought to Mary. Harry almost becomes the same as the cat, since now he has threatened, or even ruined the peace in the garden.

One of the most prominent symbols throughout this short story is the white quail. The author, John Steinbeck, continuously mentions this white quail in multiple manners. Mary is considerably interested in this creature, as it helps her grasp a more thorough understanding of herself. She sees the beautiful, peaceful, independent quail as a secret side of her personality. Not only do the quail's individual actions represent her "other side", but the death of the quail at the end of the story builds even more complexity. Harry accidentally shooting the bird reveals his selfishness towards Mary. He only wants to be with the shallow and romantic side of her, rather than learn the depths of her character. By killing the quail, he figuratively sacrifices her individuality for his own good, as well as their relationship as a whole.

The symbol of the white quail represents Mary and how she loves her garden and how she is unique in the way that she loves her garden, because quails aren’t typically white so this one is very rare. This relates to the story because when she told her husband about the white quail and how she thought it represented her, he didn’t even believe that a quail could be white. This also helps develop further because when the husband goes to kill the cat in the garden he accidentally kills the quail. This shows how he is lonely because he doesn’t understand his wife, and by killing the quail it is almost as if he killed his wife, because that quail and her garden brings her so much joy that he now killed.

In the story "The White Quail", Mary seems to be very drawn to the white quail that she sees in her garden. She makes a personal and emotional connection with the quail and considers herself to be the quail. Because of the color of the quail, I think that this symbolizes purity. She is looking at the quail and seeing the purest form of herself. To take it a step further, when Harry kills the quail, this may symbolize him tarnishing a part of her or essentially "killing" her. Although the husband appears to be supportive of her and her fascination with the birds and garden, he is not as emotionally invested as she is. This could also tie into Mary seeing herself as bright and innocent or pure prior to her father's passing as well.

The white quail symbolizes how Mary views herself. The Quail represents innocence, which describes Mary. Mary has a fear of the cat, as it symbolized something much greater than a cat in the story. She was terrified that the cat would kill the quail which symbolized that her innocence would be killed. Mary's husband (Harry) shooting the cat, serves as a symbol that Mary's innocence has been killed.

thinking just about the dog/pup, I think it symbolizes the idea of change/deviation and imperfection. Dogs can be perceived a multitude of ways, one of which being strong, courageous, loyal pets, but in the other sense, dirty creatures that slobber and take up a lot of time and energy. By stopping Harry from getting the dog, she was robbing him of a great companion just to keep her garden perfect. The dog is a symbol for imperfection, and, in a greater sense, a symbol for what would content Harry; something that could ruin Mary's garden. When Harry yielded getting the pup since Mary did not want it, that gesture was symbolic of the overarching idea that Harry compromised his own happiness to fuel Mary's obsession with perfection.

In the "White Quail," a symbol that is evident in showing anger is the cat that comes and disturbs Mary's garden. This symbol reveals characteristics of Harry's anger toward Mary; this anger stems from the way Harry feels about Mary's manipulation towards him. As the cat comes and disturbs the garden, Mary becomes enraged as she sees the garden as a piece of herself becoming disrupted and messed with. As the story ends, rather than Harry killing the cat as he is told to, he ends up killing the white quail. Symbolically, this shows how Harry's anger is still prominent within their relationship as he refuses to kill what Mary despises.

In the story "The White Quail," the white quail symbolizes the main character, Mary Teller. The color white typically resembles purity and/or innocence. As Mary Teller's character is developed throughout the story, the author proves her to be pure and innocent by the way she cares for the garden, her husband, and additionally, through her dialogue. Mary Teller also cares for the white quail that visits her garden and even calls the quail "Mary." This symbolism reveals the gentle heart that Mary has and how, like a white quail, she is pure and innocent.

To Mary, this garden symbolizes her relationship with her husband and herself. Mary is very meticulous about her garden, wanting it to remain untouchable, which is a symbol for her relationship with her husband. In fact, Mary was found to always lock the door before she went to bed despite her husbands countless efforts to open her door at night. This represents the connection between Mary and the garden and how she sees it as herself. Mary only decided to marry her husband after he had approved her garden.

The symbol of the white quail develops throughout the story as Mary begins to see herself as the quail in her garden. Mary was terrified of something horrible happening to the quail becase she didn't want its purity and beauty to be disturbed. Because of this, Mary begins to obsess over protecting the quail, as she is also particular about her own purity and innocence.

In The White Quail, the garden represents peace as well as Mary's mind. Mary uses the garden as her safe space; it brings her peace of mind and allows her to relax. And based on her descriptions of the garden and the events that take place, it's almost as though whenever she is in the garden she is lost in her subconscious, or rather her thoughts. This would explain why when she's in the garden she has a vision of herself in the sitting room. While in the garden she is able to see herself as she appears to others; and she enjoys this. She also decides not to tell Harry of her visions because she doesn't want him to spoil them. This would support the idea that the garden is an area that brings her peace and allows her to get lost in her thoughts without judgment. As for her subconscious, she designed the garden to reflect her; or more specifically to attract things that she sees herself in(i.e. the white quail).

I feel as if fuchsias reference to Mary’s and Harry’s relationship. At the beginning of the story, Mary is happy about planting her garden with lots of fuchsias bushes. The next time the fuchsias were referenced. Mary was talking about how the fuchsias took extra time to grow and bloom. This is more in the middle of the story. The fuchsias were used to keep animals out. The fuchsias were used as a shield. The quail had even died where the fuchsias had grown. Toward the end of the story and their relationship. The fuchsias were used as a projection of Mary herself, and her feelings towards her marriage.

In "The White Quail" by John Steinback the white quail was the most salient symbol in the story. Mary is a complex and broken character hat feels misunderstood, especially by her husband Harry. The garden and specifically the quail bring Mary into a comforting space and remind her of a sense of control she still has. Her way of controlling her life to be "perfect" is to make the perfect garden. She made this garden because she can't control being broken but she has control over creating this not broken and perfect garden. The quail in the garden represents Mary's unbroken side and her version of being unbroken. The quail is happy and free and she attaches it to the idea of what she wishes to be. She does everything to protect it and when the cat threatens its existence it brings back vulnerable feelings for Mary. Feelings from when her dad died and when she felt broken, showing she connects the quail to what she wishes to be: unbroken and not hurt.

In "The White Quail" by John Steinbeck, the cat represents Mary and Harry's failing marriage as Mary believes the cat will harm her garden. The related example of her garden representing her marriage leads me to believe that the cat threatening the garden is actually a complex symbol of her failing marriage. This is shown through the clear solace Mary finds in her garden and her eager protectiveness it. As she thinks the cat could ruin her beloved garden Mary frets over the issue of the cat, which through her warped sense of reality, symbolizes the threats to her marriage.
