Russia and the Republics have very cold climates. The climates reflect the influence of the regions high latitude and the impact of the wall of mountains in the southeast. Continentality is the effect of the regions being hundreds of miles from the moderating influence of the sea. Russia has very cold winters and very hot summers. In the winter climates can reach -30°C and lower and sometimes heavy snowfall. Precipitation in Russia annually varies from region to region. he Western parts of Russia have the most rainfall (up to 750mm). The southern and southeastern areas in the russian Steppes are the dryest with an annual average below 220mm.

The Vegetation in Russia is cold so not many trees survive there. The tundra vegetation grows mosses, lichens, and low shrubs. Most of the ground is covered in a lot of snow It has a shallow surface layer of thaws. The taiga in Russia has most of the permafrost. Through out the taiga in Russia trees are mainly small and wide spaced. Russia's forest covers nearly two fifths of the country's total territory and nearly one fourth of the worlds total forested area. The vast zone is made up of coniferous trees, but birch, poplar, aspen, willow, and other deciduous trees add to the diversity of the forest in some places.
