Ratliff's "one note theory" is very similar to his repetition theory earlier in the book. By using a single note it is easier to emphasize a specific part of the song. It is through this idea that both theories relate. This idea of a single note varies between artists and how they would like to use it but the single note usually either represents an idea itself or is used to emphasize something else within the song. In John Lee Hooker's song, Church Bell Tone, he uses the idea of a "single note" style to set of the tone of the song. Its slow and melancholy like the message. He is talking about the loss of his woman who is "down in shady land". Not only does the note mimic the tone of the song but its also supposed to mimic the sound of a church bell which John says he hears in his song. I believe this is supposed to parallel the church bell you hear at a funeral sometimes. This furthers the style and situation of which the song is talking about. This theory works similarly in the song Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton. They both use a limited about of notes and chords in this song to portray a deeper message. Eric Clapton repeats the same chords over and over to better emphasize the lyrics rather than focusing specifically on the music itself. Both of these are great songs with very deep messages. I recommend that anyone who enjoys music listen to these songs to better appreciate the "single note" theory that Ratliff describes in this chapter.
