Q1 This first artifact is about the map of the ships as Singapore was known as a trading port and hence showing the various stops for the ships at the navigation routes in black and white. The second artifacts talks about the map in Singapore in colors and the various spellings in the past, eg Pyah Laebar.

Q2 Somber and confusion as there was planning of settlements in Singapore, wills, testament etc. During the Age of Enlightenment, there was rise of new philosophical thinking, as people like Voltaire bring the movement. The middle class can have more access to things used to be only reserved for the wealthy.

Q3 I wish that Singapore was more organized and the friendship between the Dutch and the British could be better. The planning of Singapore and the navigation route could be better.

1. Why did we select these two artifacts?
Source 1: Scribal copy of 1819 treaty of friendship and alliance.
We select this one because It was a treaty of amity in 1819
, In an 1819 treaty of friendship, the sultan agreed to lease land for the British east India company to set up a trade war, and the British east India company agreed to pay an annual fee. The enlightenment was a movement that called for reason, freedom of speech, and the signing of a treaty of amity seemed to mean more peace between the two sides.

Source 2: The Bute map
We select this one because it‘s the earliest known landward map of Singapore. There are many historical sites on the map, as well as many military facilities. It records many precious files of Singapore. It is said that many people are playing in the middle of the pool.

2.Through the guide, I got a sense of some of the developments and achievements of Singapore in the 18th century. Through the first source, Britain and Malaysia jointly managed the land, a balance was struck between the cultures, and became a symbol because the British government was colonizing Singapore

3.Through understanding the historical development of Singapore in the 18th century, I hope the cultural development will be faster and better

This shows how people in the age of Enlightenment ventured to gain knowledge and understand the world.

Source 2: Da Asia de Joao de Barnos, book in 1777 by Joao de Barnos. In the 19th century, there’s different changes from architecture to people. There’s a bigger development in the century. With the new architecture, new buildings, new road development, new transportation, new amenities, it brings convenience to the people.

ANGLO-Dutch treaty, monarch version.
London, March 17 1824
I chose this because it represented the interests of Europeans as they explore and colonize to further develop their lands. It is also interesting as the British and Dutch didn't go to war. Also, it's a relief we were not colonized by the Dutch.

What is something significant that took place during the 19th century, or something you wish would have happened?
I wish that more Europeans would decide to settle in Singapore, bringing in musicians developing the musical scene like they would in the UK.
