A boy is living because things such as food and water are needed to generate cells so that growth can take place.

The tree is living because it grows and consumes energy. A tree meets the characteristics of life. 

Rock: Simply saying the a rock is not living. A rock does NOT meet the characteristics of life. A rock does not use energy, it does not meet the characteristics of life. 

Fire: A fire is not living. A fire can not inhale or exhale, reproduce, or contain DNA or RNA. 

Boy: A boy would be considered living. He can reproduce, pass traits off to her kids (offspring),he also can use energy.
