I would imagine most of us would have similar stories of substitution. For me it is word processing, creating displays to print and PowerPoint when a poster created by hand would have the same value for learning. I'm sure there are others!

I taught a child with dyslexia. She possessed a wonderful imagination and wrote beautiful stories. However, she had great difficulties with spelling. It was to the point of her writing being illegible. I suggested to her that she write straight onto the ipad and forget the paper and pencil. She did this and her writing exploded She had the confidence to be able to learn on an 'even playing field'

This year I was struggling to spark motivation withing my students. I came across the app called Seesaw. It is an app that allows family and friends (whomever receives an invitation) to see a child's work that is being done in school. Parents etc would receive a notification from the Seesaw app that they had downloaded onto their phone. Students all of a sudden had an authentic audience. I would have students publish various learning artifacts to Seesaw. Parents could comment/like (just like Facebook) and give students that instant gratification. I found students had an increased desire to perform to their optimum. This authentic audience would not be possible without technology.

My wife is American. I was teaching a grade 5 class and part of the Geography curriculum involved knowing the relative location of North America from Australia. From that we discussed how Australians adapt to live in the climate that we do. My wife is from New York and we prepared questions about how people there adapt to live in the brutal cold. I organised a Skype call with my in-laws, who happily answered questions my students had. I beamed them up onto our class smartboard.

Another example is a family friend, who also lives in USA. He is a well known artist in New England and he specialises in using clay. We Skyped him and had him on the smartboard. He was giving demonstrations on the board as my students followed.

Both of these are examples of using technology to redesign and authenticate learning opportunities.
