Fractions and Decimals
When teaching pupils to read decimals, read the number with its name showing the place value. For example, when I see 0.01, I would read this as “one hundredth” because there is one in the hundredths place. This makes comparing fractions and decimals significantly easier!

Use a multitude of pictural and concrete examples to teach fractions, including: base tens, number lines, pizzas, tables.

Place value is fundamental to a pupil’s understanding of fractions and decimals. Ensure that they recognise the value of digits both above and below one before teaching this topic.

Use set phrases when explaining concepts, ensuring a consistent approach. For example, ‘the whole has been divided into __ equal parts and we have __ of those parts’ and ‘the digit 1 in 0.1 has the value of one tenth as there is the number 1 in the tenths column’.
