My name is Aaron Fordrey and I am a vocalist, guitarist and drummer. I plan to be mostly creating music influenced by metal genres such as Nu metal, Hardcore and Metalcore. I plan to work on solo projects and in bands to give myself as much creative influence as possible. I wish to explore using samples in my music instead of just my instruments to give my music a wider range of diversity.

With drums not being an instrument I play often, innovation became a big challenge for me to do. Learning new techniques was out of the question as I wanted to become more confident in my fills anytime keeping throughout the set list. So instead for innovation I looked into what I could change while playing. I decided to look into the cymbals, kick drum and snare drum.

My first area of innovation was to use more bell related rhythm drum patterns, not only using the ride but crash bells to add a more diverse dynamic to the track. This will be created by using the bells almost as a replacement for crash hits during segments in which I feel the crash is too loud and overpowering to use.

Areas I have used it in, I have so far used this idea for the pre chorus of dreams and the intro of naive.

Adding this has helped manage the volume levels, a problem I struggled with, and maintain a consistent flow to the track. The bell creates a higher ring then using a splash hit on the cymbals, as well as a cleaner tone and a more vibrant sound to match the quieter moments in our music. The splash would be too overpowering where as the bell stands out but does not drown out other noise.

As well as this, I am using more innovation with my kick and snare patterns throughout the songs, changing during each segment as well as using a more punchier pattern throughout the verses. This comes from my influence of metal as the kick and snare has a large impact on the songs on which I enjoy the most. I have changed the patterns to match the guitar chords and strum changes more accurately to add more significance to these changes in the songs.

For track 1 - Track 1 is an original song called something. For this track I had to create my own part to play in the track and help with the structure of the song as it became a band writing process after we were presented with the idea of the track. Throughout the track I have added quieter parts in order to change the intensity of the song. This was done by rim hits on the snare, removing the kick and very quiet body hits onto the ride, this was added to the first verse to bring a softer feel to the track. I then use a snare + high tom fill in order to lift the track up going into the chorus, ending the fill with a crash hit. The chorus uses crash edge hits on the ride with a simple kick and snare pattern to intensify the chorus adding to the grand nature of the lead guitar with a crash hit at the end of the bar then a change in snare pattern to lead into a fill after 4 bars. The second verse uses the same kick and snare pattern as the verse but with a shut high hat that slowly opens throughout the verse to raise the volume. This was done to keep energy from the chorus but to distinguish to the listener that it is back into a verse with a softer less intense feel. After this verse the same fill is brought back to lead into the chorus then into a bridge. The bridge uses a softer hit onto the ride body instead of a crash hit on the edge like the chorus to not only distinguish itself but to also bring down the energy slightly to make the final chorus more impactful.

For track 2 - For track 2 I decided to not learn the original drum track for the song. Instead I have played along and leant the song off of how the band play the song. This decision was made to bring a more natural feel to the cover and to make the song feel as original as possible. Playing relatively similar to the original track, I have achieved a good balance of authenticity and originality through my use of adaption.

Track 3 - For track 3 it was quite difficult to include myself into this track as it was a house song with pre recorded digital drums. The way I slotted myself into the track was a snare roll during the build up to the drop, and after the drop a simple kick, snare and floor tom drum pattern to the same rhythm of the track. This was difficult to achieve at first but after a few practices I managed to play it well.

I will be sustainable through sticking to my practice schedule and keeping healthy. Keeping healthy will bring a large contribution to my ability during practice and during my performance, this is because physical and mental wellbeing can affect a person more than they realise and taking that risk before a performance can be detrimental. I will be keeping healthy by playing football every week and sticking to a healthy diet.

As well as this, I will stretch before and after practice and shows to keep my body healthy and so I cannot injure myself. This will be good to prevent long term injuries which would majority impact my career and the band. To help prevent this even further, breaks will be taken at every practice and I will always have water present throughout any time wen playing the drums.

To prevent these problems I can stay fit and eat healthy, this will help prevent illness along with exhaustion. To prevent boredom I could switch up my playing to a level only I can notice, such as using a slightly different drum fill each night, this will keep me occupied and alert without throwing anyone else in the band off.

Heath and Safety is important for rehearsal spaces as you can not only damage yourself, but also the equipment. To prevent this these are some of the rules which we abide by.

No smoking in the rehearsal space - The rehearsal spaces are an indoor area which would not only be illegal to smoke in, but also dangerous. Sound insolation on the walls are very flammable meaning the building could be heavily damaged, but also smoking is unhealthy and can affect our performance on stage and during practice as it damages your lungs.

No liquids by equipment - Liquids ca easily spill especially if not sealed correctly which is easy to do. To prevent damage to the equipment and the site, no drinks are permitted near any of equipment to prevent any accidents.

Cable management - Cables can be a big tripping hazard which can lead to injury if you were to fall. To prevent this all cables will be properly used and managed, an examples of this is coiling cables after use and under microphone stands while in use. As well as this to not have any cable raised above the floor if spread across the room.

Money is very important to not only have but to keep track of. Money is needed for, merch, venue hire, rehearsal spaces and transport. to solve this problem, money used for the band will be split equally 4 ways to pay for what we need. As well as this, money made will be kept into a shared account which will then go back into the band to pay for our expenses. The band will also have an 'emergency pot' of £200 from each members own pocket. This will only be used when the whole band agrees on it as it will be our personal money being used. This could be use for scenarios like, a break down on our transport, having to pay for a hotel, or a fine.

Ways we could help are.

Public transport - instead of getting to venues by Uber or a personal car we will take a train or bus. This will be better cheaper and better for the environment, however slightly less convenient.

Using recycled paper - This will be done when creating posters to promote our shows.

Using recycled gear - Using older gear that still works not only sounds better, but it also means less new gear gets produced and brought which is better for the environment and also cheaper to do.

I have taken this task on as one of my strengths is networking and organisation. I have already began to plan a joint event including other bands on this course to play an open mic night at Cassa Blanca. Everyone else has a different role such as, Ethan is in charge of arranging and booking the rehearsals for the band, Ziggy is in charge of song writing and promotion, and Harvey is in charge of social media and artwork for the band. With all of us focusing on something different it means the band can work more efficiently and it is less stressful for everyone involved as they know they have support and help on this project.
