In this book, all kinds of ways to make a family is introduced. Every family structure may look different. For instance, not every family will have a mom dad, sister and brother, they instead might live with two moms or two dads or just one parent. They might have parents who are split up and live at two different homes or have a step dad or step mom. Some children are adopted or live with a foster family. Not only can families appear different, they may enjoy partaking in different activities and traditions as well. This book also introduces the concept of families changing over time and that there is no such thing as a "normal family."

Makayla gains insight through her mom as she teaches her that family is what makes you feel important, loved and cared for.

What is one "great" thing about your family?

I will create a list of some ideas from students thoughts on chart paper to give them ideas of what to write and draw. Students' posters will be large so they're are expected to incorporate a great deal of details in their drawings. Crayons, colored pencils, and paint will be provided for all. Welcome to my text set! I have chosen 5 children books within the theme of 'family structures' (4 fictional and 1 juvenile nonfiction). I have happily chosen: A Family is a Family is a Family by Sara O'Leary, All Kinds of Families by Anita Ganeri, My Family, Your Family, Our Family by Emma Carlson Berne, My Family, Your Family by Lisa Bullard, and All Kinds of Families by Martha E.H. Rustad. Within all these recent and diverse children books, I noticed a common  theme of accepting differences between every family. As a bunch, they promote the idea that although families may appear different, the most important purpose is that families are there to help, support, and love one another. I chose the theme of 'family structures' because I believe children should be aware that not all families look the same and that's completely ok. Many kids whom I work with assume that a family strictly looks like one mom, one dad and siblings. I believe children should be able to have a conversation with their classmates/ friends and possess the awareness in order not to offend anyone. This text set will allow me to teach students the different appearances of a family and show how unique it can be.
