The role of AI in transportation is something really being explored in 2025. It has been gaining popularity and now the emergence of companies like Waymo for robotaxis, alongside Amazon to optimize its routes it sends deliveries on. Their are also experimental ideals on how to integrate AI to reduce traffic with the traffic lights. As someone who is really enthusiastic about autonomous robotics, having previously completed a software engineering internship at Cornell Tech, where I worked in the Future Autonomous Lab, I really enjoy researching the transportation industry further. I think it has a lot of room to grow in terms of how AI can be used to transform the industry. I really like the innovation Waymo is creating and how fast they are expanding to cities like san fransico, and now recently experimenting in new york city! We will be covering 3 different sections of how AI is being used today, the future trends of those technologies and the societal impact of them all.

Transportation - Robotaxis

Robotaxis use AI to navigate roads without human drivers. Companies like Waymo, Zoox(Amazon) and Tesla are testing robotaxi services in many cities to provide safe, on-demand mobility while reducing human error. Plus I don’t like talking to the Uber driver so i rather this.

Future Trends and Ethical Considerations

The first thing I see is we currently have the rise of cloud computing, where Software as a service is growing rapidly in popularity. Similarly, in the transportation industry we could have mobility as a service. This could be where more delivery companies adopt route optimization technology to increase revenue or adopt self driving technology to stop paying truck drivers to deliver products. Truck driving and delivery is a largely needed part of any successful company. Today if all truck drivers stopped moving for just 1 day, it would cost companies $6 billion (60+ Trucking Industry Statistics: Trends + Outlook, 2025). Companies finding efficient and cost effective ways to move products is the future. Also to make traffic systems and autonomous vehicles more efficient, I see a stronger reliance on faster 5G internet connections to increase reliability of the systems.

For ethical considerations, one thing that comes to mind regarding robotaxis is the trolley problem. It is something that people have a hard time with in philosphy, but what about in unavoidable accidents. Does it protect the pedestrain or the passenger? Who is more valuable according to the system? As well, misuse of transportation data if a system is hacked could be a massive issue. A compromised robotaxi, delivery truck or even traffic signal could endanger lives, making strong security essential to the success of any of them. Lastly, in recent sessions we talked about ai being biased. Route optimization and traffic systems may unintentionally favor wealthier neighborhoods or high-traffic roads if stereotypes persisted in the data. This can lead to longer wait times, reduced service for low-income areas.

Societal Impact

AI automation in transportation threatens to displace millions of workers, particularly truck drivers, taxi drivers, delivery personnel, and public transit operators. The rise of robotaxis and autonomous freight could reduce demand for human drivers, leading to widespread job losses in a sector that employs millions globally. Without strong data governance, travel patterns could be used for profiling, targeted advertising, or even law enforcement monitoring, threatening personal privacy. Also adding AI to transportation systems risk deepening social divides if not designed inclusively. For example, taxi algorithms may avoid low-income neighborhoods due to lower profitability compared to wealthier neighborhoods. Also, as AI transportation systems advance, they require high-speed internet, more complex infrastructure, and connected devices. Rural and low-income areas may lack these intensive resources, leading to a digital divide where only certain regions benefit from AI advancements (RTS Labs, 2024). Lastly, in regards to the environment, although autonomous vehicles are meant to lower emissions, the convenience of robotaxis may lead to increased vehicle miles traveled, especially if people opt for single-occupancy rides over shared transit. This could unintentionally increase urban sprawl and pollution.

AI in the industry seems like a double edged sword. I love the advancements I have been researching as they seem to advance societal issues we currently have. However, if we do not learn from the past it could cause a new wave of separation in regards to who has access to this future. Also digital analysis of environments on the road, for traffic could also invade privacy and be a jackpot for hackers, making it very problematic if not dealt with carefully.

It opened my eyes to a potential digital divide as companies like Waymo would thrive more in affluent communities compared to lower income ones, as they would gain more money there. As well I learned about how AI route optimization, autonomous fleets, and smart traffic management highlights how machine learning and real-time analytics are redefining how travel and transit can be in a few years. I didn't really have a challenge, I only did with uploading the videos and images. It seems it only allows you to upload one, so I added the video at the top, and added the link to the image so its easy to open up, so I can get credit for both the images and video being in the posts.
