What did I learn... That Rhum can be very strong! Felt like i was going blind when I got the fumes in my eyes while testing that freshproduced rhum. So I realized that I will have no carreer as a modern Jack Sparrow after all. I liked the fact that machines from 1920ies were still in use. That is sustainability in a world where many machines are programmed to not last too long. I also liked to see our guides pride in the family estate and their company. That is a sign of good things if you can be proud of where you work.

Earlier when walking to the waterfall i was amazed by the work that had been done to prepare those paths. It would have been a big work with machines - the insight that every stone, sack of concrete and water had been carried all the way is simply mindblowing. And we only saw a small part of the paths. It is simply a huge accomplishment, and one done in a part of France (that mostly seem to be doing strikes and stuff...). Hats off! Other than that i could see why the slaves were safe in those forrests, it was really tough terrain and not easy to find someone who wants to stay hidden. It was a surprise that there were so few animals. I had pictured the jungle according to stories starting with Kipplings Junglebook and others after that. I also was surprised that there were so little obvious things to eat for humans. All in all a fascinating ecosystem. I come to think of the words "if you want to find something, you have to prepare yourself for getting lost" I found new insights and learned many new things today. Maybe it is like Phil Collins is singing in his song: "For you and me it is another day in Paradise"

Today I learnt that nature never gets boring. There will be always something new to discover. Even when it Is very small.
I was impressed by all the different plants and their individuality regarding to their size, looks and hidden values.

Today's visit to the rainforest was absolutely amazing! It was like being in the Amazon, with the only difference that here we could find no jaguars, no caimans, no anacondas... not even giant spiders! I was surprised to discover how high the waterfall is on a quite small island like this: you can see it even from the sea, and that's the main reason why Columbus landed here, as he was in need of freshwater. Later we visited the rhum distillery, and it was a true pleasure for me to watch all those old machines working, it looked like a far west goldmine. And, last but not least, thanks to Niklas I finally had the chance to see an iguana, which is one of the main reasons why I decided to come to Guadeloupe 😀.

Annalisa
Today was an immersion in the nature. During the excursion in the forest I thought about the key competences I chose; I know mathematics is on international language, it's a complex subject but also it could be an easy language, also science and technology could be applied in many or even in all fields. The excursion as a personal experience was relaxing, I enjoyed all moments in the forest. The waterfall viewwas like looking at a painting.
In the morning we went to the kassaverie, I liked a lot "Les cassaves"; while at the end of the day the tour in the Rhum distillery was a nice experience, I liked to see how the rhum is made. As usual I gained a lot of new information and at the end of the tour we saw also an iguana...what wish more!

What I learned today is the amazing fact that dreams really come true sometimes. So keep on dreaming :)

It has been my dream for years to see and feel a rainforest and I can't tell you how happy I was walking in there today. And how fortunate and happy I feel now.
When it comes to the one of the key competences I picked: Social and Sivic Competences I woud very much like to make a project of "Empowering Photography" in the rainforest with my students. It would be amazing. (Actually, it woud be amazing in any forest, but especially here)
I would modify the original idea so that they would take the pictures of each others aiming to most respectful and beautiful results. I think that such a powerful surraunding (the rainforest) would make a huge difference to the pictures.
I don't link the photo today, but a little information of "Empowering Photography" by Miina Savolainen

http://www.voimauttavavalokuva.net/english/menetelma.htm

I learned today that nature is the same concept wherever you are. The ways we experience it, depends on the person. If we walk in the rainforest in Guadeloupe, Brazil or Australia they can look exactly the same. Of course there are different animals and plants but the differences are not very big. If you go into the woods, in a traditional pine forest in Finland it doesn't seem very exotic if you are used to it. Still, it can offer you a very powerful experience. There is definitely something about nature!
It is always a good idea to take the pupils to the nature. While admiring the green colours of the tick wild and humid forest and listening to birds singing I was planning an excursion with my English class to a rainforest.
We would go into the topic by talking about the different types of forest in the world. What are the rainforests, where are they located, what are the biggest threats to the rainforests etc?
I would give them a short introduction and an worksheet to fill in with their pair or in small groups. In the rainforest their task would be to take pictures of given word in English and make a pic collage afterwords of all the words in English/French or some other language. Alternatively the pupils could make a presentation/slideshow of the walk in the forest and tell what they saw and what they found the most interesting. The pupils would learn new vocabulary related to rainforest and nature in general. We could broaden the topic of course and discuss the environmental issues etc.
