In the video from 11:56 to 13:41 , it represented the process of cutting off the fins from fishermen in Mozambique, Africa.

A local fisherman started hunting sharks in 2008, but he stopped working in shark hunting. He pointed out that fishermen have two ways to cut off the fins. The first way is that they will drive the fishing boat to an area which is closed to the living place of the sharks. Then forcefully they would grasp the shark with their hands, and cut off the fin with a knife, finally they threw the shark back into the ocean and no longer cared about their life of sharks. Later, they sold the fins to the market to get a good income.

The second way is that fishermen will drag the dying shark onto the land and cut off the fins. They think that the shark meat is not valuable, so they will sell it to the villagers with a low price or give the meat to other villagers. Shark meat has also become the main source of protein to villagers in the entire African coastal area. This shows that there are a large number of sharks hunted to fulfill the dietary needs of local villagers.

By Wong Tsz Ching, Nicole

Gillnetting is a fishing method mainly used to catch migratory fish. The drift gillnet uses a rectangular mesh woven with one or more layers of plastic filaments. Generally, multiple meshes are combined. The upper edge is tied with a plurality of floats made of sponge plastic, and the lower end is equipped with a lead sinker, which is vertically stretched. Opened near the sea level, waiting for fish to swim in and become entangled in nets. Because it moves with the ocean currents and the entangled fish hang on the net like a thorn, it is called a "drift net."

The lethality of drift gillnets is great. Large drift gillnets are often composed of three layers of nets of large, medium and small nets. Both large fish and small fish are caught, which will cause an ecological catastrophe.

by Wong Yuet Ying, Toby

by Wong Yuet Ying, Toby

Sharks have lived on the earth for nearly 400 million years and have always been predators of the earth's food chain, but they are also very vulnerable to humans. Conservation Situation There are 17 types of sharks in 58 types of extinction crisis.

In 2013, a report warned that nearly 100 million sharks are exploded every year due to the demand for shark fin, fish meat and liver oil. Now, sharks and their near-IUCN have become threatened relatives or near-endangered. These environmental predators are eliminated, and the marine ecological balance causes non-renewable damage. The number of other mid-level predators may increase, affecting other numbers and the overall rate of extinction of marine life.

by Wong Yuet Ying, Toby
