Professor Green: Suicide and me.

This Social acton is a participatory documentary which follows Stephen Green (a.k.a. Professor Green) as he finds out about male suicide to try and put his demons to rest. This documentary makes you feel sympathetic of the people who have tried to take their own lives and the ones that have as they think that it is the only option that they have especially if they think that it would be better for everyone that knows them if they just kill themselves. This piece has had an effect on me as it has changed my views on suicide and it makes me very sympathetic and makes me think of what has set them on to the path of suicide in the first place.

In this social action piece we see Stephen Green a.k.a. Professor Green on a train as the establishing shot this instantly tells the person who is watching whom is presenting the piece/ it is about. We also hear Professor Green as a voice over and we hear a weird music bed at makes you fell like you should pay attention to what is being said.

This then cuts to archive footage of Professor Green preforming 'read all about' live which then cuts to him doing a talking head interview with talking space to the left of him talking about the connection of suicide in his family (dad and uncle). The piece continues to consist of cut over whilst Professor Green is saying why he is looking into suicide in males and what peoples general thoughts to suicide are this is to try and get closure for his fathers death. At this point the piece cuts to a intertile which has the piece`s name on it which is 'Professor Green: Suicide and Me' which then cuts to archive footage of him preforming 'read all about it' live with Emeli Sande which was based upon the suicide of his father.

As he is telling us this we learn a statistic "over 6,000 people in Britain take their own lives each year." We hear this to understand the scale of the subject. Then we hear another statistic "nearly 80% are male. A proportion that is on the rise" which makes you question why is it males whom take their own lives and why is it becoming more likely that someone will kill themselves. This then cuts to Professor Green inside his car travelling to Hackney east London to show us the place where he was born and grew up this is to put a more personal touch to the piece. This also allows us to see a vox pop of a old neighbour of his whilst he was younger.

Through out the length of the piece we keep seeing archive stills of people related to the topic that is being covered we see pictures of Professor Green`s dad (Peter) before he killed himself, his parents together when they were younger, a young Stephen Green, his grandmother Pat, picture of Stephen Pat and another person. which at that point we are introduced to the real Pat walking into Pro. Green`s house whilst they greet each other.

We hear what Pat has to say about his life chooses and what she thought about his dad before he past away. With information about when his parents met in terms of when he came into existence, how happy he was to have his dad around him, how it makes him feel to know more about his dad. this also shows the audience that Professor Green is very emotional attached to his father and his suicide. At that point it cuts to Professor Green turning up to a training session to build his mussels when he does a piece of interview to camera.

The piece then cuts to Professor Green about to go into a pub to met up with one of his dad`s friends Ken who elaborates on his views and what he knows about Professor Green`s dad. this is when the music bed turns to a more sad styled tune because they are talking about someone who they both emotional connected to. This scene concludes by a voice over and long shots of a city which then cuts to a busy town center which after a while cuts to Professor Green on a train heading to go speak to Ben who has almost killed himself twice due to his dad killing himself when he was younger he tells Stephen about his connections to suicide and what makes him feel like it is the best thing for him and everyone else. The conversation continues and he tells Stephen about his coping mechanisms which is concluded by Stephen giving a conclusion of what has been said by Ben.

This then cuts to a dutch angle of a wood building and a long shot of London. this then changes to him standing back at Hackney which quickly changes to him back at his house talking what his thoughts on the matter and his thoughts on his fathers passing. The Next clip we see in the piece is again Professor Green in hackney which then quickly cuts to swings at a park then the building which he grow up at where we find out why Professor Green never know about his dad`s death. this cuts to Professor Green in his car going to see where his dad grow up and talk to his dad sister Debbie about him.

When we met Debbie she reveals some stuff about Peter that he did not know before. Debbie tells him that his dad`s brother (David) committed suicide two years before his dad did (2006) with his sister (Susan) passing a year later then David (2007) which had an effect on his dad. this cuts to different shots which include both Pro. Green and Debbie. This cuts to walking towards a place that helps with suicidal thoughts called the "MayTree" which has helped to prevent hundreds of male suicides while females suicides are less. The representative (Dave) from the MayTree tells Professor Green that they stop the suicide of someone by asking them how they were going to commit suicide.

The piece then cuts to Professor Green on a train going to Glasgow University to met a Professor that specialises in male suicide Professor Rory O'conner who tells Stephen that it is likely that the person who has committed suicide has been effected by suicide in their life. This led in to the test that Rory carries out to make people think of what different sentences mean to them through the sound of the music that is being played. This is concluded by Rory telling Professor Green that the only reason that his dad would have taken his own life was because of the build up of emotions that made him feel trapped Professor Green repeats this in his own words.

The piece then cuts to Professor Green in his car with the music bed being his songs that he has created about his fathers suicide, which he elaborates on to get across how he felt in reference to the song. This cuts to the archive performance of 'read all about it' which he fades away which continues when the piece cuts back to Professor Green in his car while he explains how his fathers death effected 'read all about it'. This cuts to images of people who have put up with suicide in the family and the archive images of Lam Franco the person who took their own life. Lam`s brother and Father talk about the messages that where left after he passed and they go on to talk about the time leading up to his death and the fact they did not see any signs of Lam being suicidal.

The piece concludes with Professor Green talking to his ante and cousin about the death of his dad and opening up to his wife Millie about his dad`s suicide and what his thoughts for the future are with her and making sure that all problems that he has are gone. Professor Green also sums up everything that he has found out during the social action documentary which includes a happy music bed. It concludes by him seeing psychotherapist to talk about his demons that where left by his father`s suicide.

Student social action piece: Melissa`s story - Drink driving.

The establishing shot is not conventional as it is of a black background and white text known as a intertile which states “390. The number of 17-24 year olds killed or seriously injured due to drink driving”. In the background of this shot you hear a defibrillator and talking from a professional ambulance crew member, a worried person and a police officer who says “claim down sir.” This is a mistake from the creator of the social action film as it is about a girl that killed her friend by drink driving.

We also, hear the police officer ask “are you the driver of the vehicle sir? Have you been drinking sir?” which we get a clear quick answer “just a quick one. I thought I would be okay.” During which we see an extreme close up of a girl which is high angle with high key lighting making it look as she is close to death. We then see another intertile follows stating “…one of the biggest killers on our roads.” In connection to the first intertile.

We see a rotating pan shot of the girl so we are still interested in what the piece is about. This is followed by another intertile which states “1 in 8 deaths…” followed by another one which states “… caused by a drink driver.” Then we hear “They are trying the best that they can sir.” Again, this is a mistake from the creator of the social action film.

This then changes into another intertile which says “Melissa`s story.” This than reveals a talking head interview with talking space to tell the story. Which cuts away to a shot outside the pub which shows a binary opposite of light (Melissa`s bed room) and dark (outside the pub).

As the interview goes on what she says turns elucidative shown by the cut away to show both the girls outside the pub drunk. This changes to an extreme close up of the phone whilst one of them tries to call a taxi so that they can get home. This then changes to Melissa talking about how they decided to drive home which then cuts away to a two shot inside the car at night whilst they are going home.

The piece continues to cut away to what she says during the interview to keep the audience engaged. Until we see a black screen with no music bed, that changes into archive footage which shows the audience the outcome of what happened which still had no music bed. What then changes back to a black screen, which almost instantly goes into the next intertiles, that tells us what the outcome was for Melissa. This also includes sound effects of an emergency vehicle (an ambulance). At the end we see a graphic that says “50. Fifty years of campaigning against drink driving. THINK!” This is seen at the same time we hear the end of the music bed.

This piece is a old student action and recreation piece which makes you believe that this is modern story that makes you think twice about who you get a lift of to get to your home. it also makes you think do I want to drink and drive or how can I avoid a drink driver and this can never happen to me.

BBC three: Is Britain racist?

This Social acton is a participatory documentary which follows Mina Chelaby as she finds out how racist Britain is. This documentary makes me feel like there is more to the topic of racism then we think that there is in certain areas of the UK. This documentary makes me question my prejudice opinion especially since I grow up in an area that was near a town that is mostly populated by Jewish people.

The establishing shot is not conventional as it shows archive footage of people being verbally aggressive towards people who do not look as if they are arrogantly from Britain. This continues to show clips that will be shown later in the documentary and cut shots to the beat of the music bed which is lively and aggressive which refers to the archive clips that are shown.

This cuts to Mina in a cafe working on her laptop whilst we hear a voice over of what she does and what she will do to get racism publicised. Which cuts to archive footage of EDL (the English Defence League) demonstrations, which Mina chooses to take part in one to find out how racist they are even if they suggest that they are not. The demonstration filming comes to an end when one person acts radically and when the presenter says they felt like someone was eyeing them up and down it meant that they felt like they where singled out from the crowd.

This cuts to Mina driving in her car which then cuts to archive footage of physical hate crime taken from street cameras and phone cameras. this cuts to three different people to allow us to know who are going under cover to see if hate crime is spread out through the country (Hanna, Deji and Richard). This cuts to busy town shots whilst we hear what the experiment is going be and where Hanna, Deji and Richard come into the picture.

This cuts to us seeing Hanna in a car about to take part in the experiment this then follows Hanna as she goes around Dudley town center. Which then Hanna feeds back on to the camera waiting in the car for her. This is when we hear about a statistic about the niqab which then Hanna wears to see if she gets a different response to the response she got whilst wearing a hijab. We then see a establishing shot of Somerset where Deji will be spending a day for the experiment where he got a mixed response from the people living there. This then cuts to an establishing shot of Bradford which is the town where Richard spent his day for the experiment this when we are told by Richard what he thinks will happen during the day but he got comments that referred to the fact that he is jewish.

The next shot in the piece is a piece to camera where we find out that not all racist remarks are told to the police. Which is when they show the second test offering out free donuts to the public this test is to see if anyone will refuse free stuff from a different race and someone in a niqab. this then cuts to Deji doing an interview where he reveals that he had hate crime that was towards him in the forms of a egg being thrown towards him and someone telling him to "fuck off back to your own country". This cuts to a cafe where we met Martha Renee who had verbal abuse, unspoken prejudice and verbal racial remarks.

The piece still follows Mina Hanna Deji and Richard in test to see if Britain has unspoken prejudicious thoughts. This is when we find out by the voice over that you 18% more likely to be stopped if you are black as you are seen as suspicious. this is when they bring in a fourth test that sees if you have a more preference to black or white people which Mina carries out on random members of the public at a pub which shows the majority have a bias preference to white people.

The piece cuts to Mina going to see Professor Manos Tskiris and to find out if she has any automatic preferences to black or white people where she finds out that she has an automatic fear response to black people. This then cuts to a form of extremism in the forms of an activist cultural group Liberty GB who try to fight extremism Mina meets one of the spokesmen Jack to get his views on Britain and his thoughts on what is British clearer this is where we see his true thoughts are purely racist as he does not accept that people from western Europe can be black.

In conclusion this documentary shows us that Britain is racist due to the bringing up of a person this can normally be a subliminal message that your brain creates about a different race especially a black race. There has been racist opinion that have been undermined by people saying they are cultists/ activists like Ben from Liberty GB and any of the representatives from the EDL but they are still is basic racist remarks in what they say and do
