         <description><![CDATA[<div>Venezuela declared independence from Spain because the citizens had been suffering from high taxes and lack of self-rule for a long time. When Napoleon invaded Spain, it threatened their power to rule over colonies.  Venezuelan patriots took the chance to claim independence when Spain was at their weakest point started the war with Spain. Venezuela was successful in obtaining their freedom.</div>]]></description>

Gomez ruled by military, but created a lot of the country's infrastructure and maximized the Venezuela's production of oil, repayed all debts, and helped the economy stabilize. Through all of this, he was a tyrannical dictator that had many good strategies.</div>]]></description>

The oil and steel industries grew and nationalized. However, the oil prices in the world fell, and Venezuela was pushed back and welfare spending was cut.
