The word miai is basically a arranged marriage, So this shows Ms.Ota wants it to be an arranged marriage. Arranged marriages were popular in Japan and are more of a traditional value. Kikuji represents how he wants to be able to pick his marriages which is not atraditional value. Ms.Ota reperesents old traditions when she tells her daughter it was an arranged marriage.
