The impact this had on the United States was massive. It was considered to be a total failure, leading to criticism of the American government and the newly elected president, JFK. JFK afterwards took full responsibility but this also caused the Russian leader to view him in a less than respectable way. The bay of pigs also led to Fidel Castro adopting a full communist point of view. He soon would take missiles into Cuba, which brings America closer than it's ever been to nuclear war.

Significance / Connection

The Bay of Pigs still has a significance in today's society. Since the failure at the bay of pigs we personally have continued to interfere in global issues but unlike at the bay of pigs we do not train others. We either use our own American soldiers or we attack using airstrikes. The failure had taught us a lesson as on top of embarrassing our president it embarrasses America as a whole. This makes us look weak. Now to avoid that, by sending our own troops who we have faith in, it makes us appear as a strong country. And by using airstrikes we demonstrate our military power. The significance of the bay of pigs is that we have changed our styles of military warfare to fit the society of today.

Fidel Castro Bio

Fidel Castro was the leader of Cuba from 1959-2008 and was considered as a symbol of communism within Latin America. Fidel Castro has always been someone to rebel against Cuban government, involving himself in riots and attempts to overthrow the government. But soon Castro decides to take a more political approach and he slowly worked his way up through the cuban government. Eventually by 1959 Castro had enough power to take over the government after the resignation of the previous leader. Now Fidel was significant to the Bay of Pigs because he is the one who ordered the "crushing" of invading forces at the bay of pigs. He is also the one who negotiated with Kennedy to gain profits for the Cuban government. Due to these facts, by the end of this event relations between Cuba and the US were very shaky and trading had stopped, leading Castro to obtain military weapons from the Russians; which will cause more confrontations later on.

The Bay of Pigs opened up the 1960's with a humiliating failure and this was the beginning of Kennedy's presidency. The bay of pigs was a plan proposed by Eisenhower and followed through with on April 17th, 1961 by John F. Kennedy. The original plan was to invade at the Bay of Pigs with the US providing air cover and support from naval vessels. Kennedy modified the plan to remove air cover and move the naval support farther into the sea. Kennedy ordered the attack when cuban forces were away from the bay of pigs, but in a turn of events, the cuban forces were prepared. In 3 days the invading forces were either all killed or captured. Afterward America had to give $53 million worth in food and medicine, to free 1,113 prisoners.

http://alphahistory.com/coldwar/kennedy-address-bay-of-pigs-1961/

Within this document Kennedy is addressing the failure at the bay of pigs. He talks about communism and how the tyrannical ways are not to be underestimated. He also talks about how all free countries cannot back down against the face of communism. The main issue within this source is the spread of communism across the globe. Now Kennedy for the most part is unbiased, stating facts about the event, but Kennedy can come across as biased due to little knowledge of a communist government. He lives within a fee country so he cannot comment on the evil within a more military based government. And due to this he seems to over exaggerate events and statements due to his dislike of communism.
