Hook is a sad man that just wants to please his mother and no matter what he does he will never be good enough.

"The reflection next to hers was that of a young boy. It was my thirteenth birthday. After celebrating with the help, my instructors and only friends, I had brought her a gift since she was unable to join the festivities. Cupped in my small hands, I offered her a shiny green apple from the Forbidden Garden. Unbeknownst to me, a lethal substance lay within its peel. It was the last time I recognized the boy who reflected back at me. It was the last time my right eye ever saw her gold, bladelike fingernails that I once admired as they glittered in the sunlight." (pg.17)

This shows the way he was treated making him into the villain that he was.

" 'And know its my chance to be more...' 'More than what captain?' Smeeth asks. I turn my gaze toward my ship, the Jolly Roger, the only gift from my mother, but so undeserved. She is right. She's always been right. I owe her, but my debt is too large to pay. I will forever be indebted to her unless I finally rid myself of her. 'To be more than just a bandit, destroying and stealing, like a thief...like a ruthless pirate,' I say, the word leaving a foul taste. 'My mother's pirate!" (pg.270)

He is shown to be tired of being the puppet and he knows that what he is doing is wrong.

He smiles when the arms and legs swivel. ' A teddy bear!' Gabs exclaims. ' You're so lucky. I left mine in my bedroom when the house got all smoky.' 'you can borrow it,' Mikey says. He scans the support beams over my head and he blanches. 'Run!' Dozer screams. He turns and runs in the opposite direction. 'Get out of there, now!' 'Come on, Gwen," Pete says, waving me toward him. 'Hurry!' A plank of wood falls from the ceiling, narrowly missing me as I dash toward him. The sound of lumber, mud, and metal crashing to the ground follows me.

" When she sees me, the girl sprints forward, positioning herself between me and the boy. She pulls a slingshot from her belt. Her brows furrow and bright blue eyes narrow as she studies me. 'you'd better not touch him or else you're going to have to deal with me,' she says, pulling the elastic back on her slingshot. A steel ball sits in the pocket, aimed at my head. 'I assure you, I'm the best shot in all of Everland. Perhaps all of England.' My soul shattered when I lost my mother, but I found her, was reunited into her loving arms. Hook, on the other hand, has never known nor will ever know a mothers love. 'I'm so sorry,' I say, the words catching in my throat as I hold back my tears."

The choice of the word shattered makes you feel sad and the text to feel sad as well.
