How to best support ELL's if native language is also not strong.

1)Developmental stages of language learning--speaking, reading, and writing--and how if you don't have foundational skills, it will be difficult to move onto the next stage. 2) Definitions and examples of building blocks of linguistics-phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics.

The Linguistic Genius of Babies really highlighted the importance of social interactions. It takes a human being for babies take in "statistics."

Also, reading about the amount of words students comprehend at different stages of second language acquisition. Even at the stage 1-silent phase students can comprehend up to 300 words.

I find the information about babies taking "statistics" at 6-12 months so interesting!
I was reminded about the "pruning" of phonological receptiveness at puberty.
Shored up the concept of "pragmatic" language (I'd heard and used this before, but it's far less commonly used in my current circles and had forgotten the nuances)

I learned about "fast tracking," which made me think about how advances in technology could be used to help students acquire new languages. I was also happy to relearn all the building blocks of linguistics.
