The Compromise was made to help dissolve disputes between the Northern states and the Southern states over whether the new states would be free or slave states. Henry Clay, the main creator of the Missouri Compromise, was fearful of the tensions between the Northern and Southern states and wanted to help avoid a civil war by dissolving the disputes over the new states with a compromise. Massachusetts Senator Daniel Webster, while opposed to the extension of slavery, also saw this as a way to stop the growing disputes. They worked together to make the compromise, but it wouldn't pass. After the Mexican-American war, America gained California,Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, most of Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming. After gaining all of this territory there was much dispute over whether they would be slave states or free states.
