I have a question. In classical economics, in labor markets, minimum wage is said to cause a surplus of labor, meaning that quantity labor supplied is greater than quantity labor demanded at minimum wage. Quantity labor demanded also decreases relative to the equilibrium position in labor market. Hence, minimum wage actually decrease employment using the classical model. However, in the work that won 2021 Nobel economic prize, David Card, after conducting research and natural experiments, found that minimum wage actually increase the amount of labor hired. What is the mechanism behind this?

I have a general question concerning economics. Traditionally, the independent variable goes on the x-axis, while in economics, price goes on the y-axis, despite it determining quantity rather than the other way around. I find that this system is counter-intuitive and creates a lot of needless confusion. If price goes under, all the elasticity coefficients, for example, will simply be the slope, and graphs will also correspond to those of other subjects. Is there a deeper reason why economists abide by this norm, or is this just the way things work?

Edward Wu, 8Ba
