• What experiences do you share with the characters?

  Some experiences I share is that they were moving a lot I was not moving around for the same reasons but I was moving around a lot as a kid.

• In what ways is your family similar or different from those in the book?

  It is a lot different then my family because my mom would not let me just do whatever I wanted as a kid or my brothers she would see the things we would do so we would not hurt our self's bad.

• What did you learn about a character or group of people that you have not personally experienced?

  Something I learned was Jeannettes mom does not really care what they do and I have not personally experienced that

  One social issue in this book is their health. They are not really concerned about their health. An example of this is when Jeannette caught on fire. She was 3 years old boiling hot dogs by her self and then she had to spend a lot of time in the hospital, Another example could be when she was still in the hospital and her dad took her out of the hospital before she was allowed to leave. She still needed some more time to recover in the hospital.

Jeannette was dealt with her burns after she caught on fire, the nurse asked her in the hospital asking her about how it is at home and Jeannette said her mother lets her do anything she wants at home. "Mom says I'm mature for my age," I told them,"and she lets me cook for myself a lot." (Walls 11)

• Why did this quote stand out to you?

  This Quote stood out to me because Jeannette is revealing things to the nurse other people might not find normal.

1. Choose a significant event that occurs in your reading. What do you think the author's purpose was in telling that part of the story? A significant event that occurs in our reading is when Rex runs out of the hospital with Jeannette. Rex in the book thinks highly of him self and thinks he is better then people and does not have to follow rules. I think that is what the author is trying to show with this event

2. How effective is the author’s use of dialogue? How does dialogue enhance the storytelling? The way Jeannette uses her dialogue is very engaging in some way. The way how she implements dialogue in her book makes it seem the reader is also there experiencing what is happening. Dialogue helps make us readers find a way to learn how to know how the characters are and how they are feeling.

3. What figures of speech are used? (metaphors,similes,hyperbole,personificaiton,etc.)

   The figures of speech that are mostly being used are metaphors an example is when Jeannette was being wrapped due to the big burns she got. "Look, I'm a half-mummy,"

I think people from the time period when Jeannette was a kid other parents may have been other parents that were like Jeannette's parents. But parents now are not like that and would see their parenting ways are crazy.

2.Does the text hold the same opinion or perspective of the world as you have? What is there you consider wrong and why? The text doesn't have all the same opinion or perspective. One perspective I do not hold the same is the Parents do not really know what her kids are doing. They could be in harm and they would not even know an example of this is "Brian and I were knocked to our feet. When we stood up, one of the walls was on fire." In this part of the book they had a bunch of chemicals in a shed and started a fire and Brian got suck in side but his dad was walking up from work and saved him but if he was not there Brian could have died.

  One social issue in this book is their social Class. An example of this is when Rex lost his job after 6 months and Jeannette said "I guess we can eat less," then Lori said"We have before," . So this is something they are use to because Rex does not ever hold a job for long. They were all hungry and sometimes barely had anything to eat. At one point they ate some butter and the mom got mad because she said they were being selfish.

  An experiences is that the Mom was a teacher and my mom use to be a teacher for a little bit.

  A way my family is different is that in this part of the book it said how Jeannette's mom does not like cooking, but my mom loves to cook she makes a lot of different things.

  Something I have not personally experienced is watching my dad have my mom out the window like in the book.

  
  

1. How do economic conditions determine the characters' lives?

   There economic conditions determine how they live because sometimes they do not even have enough for food and they have learned how to live like that when they need to. Also there parents do not have money so they can be in the hospital so whenever any of them were in the hospital they would sneak out.

In the book when they get to a new house in Welch Jeanette says "We'd get a wicked electric shock if we touched any damp or metallic surface in the room". This quote stood out to me because I dont think kids should be living like that. I also dont think its normal for you to get electrocuted when you do something in your kitchen. I dont know how it would feel if that would happen to me.

  Social Class is present more in Jeanettes life because they are living way different lifes then other people in a higher social class. Because she would say her house was rough to live in.

  An experiences I might share is that as a kid some of my things at home did not work. Just like in the book where in the house not everything worked.

• In what ways is your family similar or different from those in the book?

  Something that was different is that I would never electrocuted using anything in my house like in the book where they would use something in the kitchen

• What did you learn about a character or group of people that you have not personally experienced?

  Something I have not personally experienced is that when Rex was wining money he let Jeanette go up stairs with a guy and she really did not want to go.

  
  

Jeannette would not have enough money for food to take to school but kids would throw away a lot of food that she thought was still good. "I couldn't get over the way kids tossed out all this perfectly good food". She would hide in the bathroom to eat the food. Because she was hungry

• What experiences do you share with the characters?

  One experience I have with Jeannette is that I save for things I want in life like her maybe not the same things but I still save.

• In what ways is your family similar or different from those in the book? My family is way different because I dont have a dad that spends all the money on gambling or on useless things

  One thing I learned that I have not experienced is that they dont believe in there dad no more because of all the things he has done to them

  
  

  
  

A force that is motivating the characters is to leave to get out and have a better life. The kids are doing what ever they can to leave. They are saving money by doing what ever kinds of jobs. They are tired of Rex and that is what is motivating them to leave even more. The mom is no help to them and she does not want to leave Rex so they have no hope with her.
