In December, there are ceremonies, which are of great importance. Ceremonies are like birthdays, but everyone has the same birthdays. Ages move up. Ones get their names and families. Nines get their bikes. Twelves get their Assignments. December is the most important time of year as everyone changes into something more.

Utopia- Sweet moments of life combined with a bitter core- bitter (bad) people get released. There are people that live sweet, and people that live sour.
Sameness- Different apples in the world, different people. Here, everyone is equal.
Perfect?- Apples are not bruised, but then gets bruised, not so perfect anymore (nothing gold can stay).
Growth- Seed in the middle grow into more, the apples have to grow so people can eat them. Like apples, people grow.

In Jonas' utopia, there are rules. Those rules are important. The utopia has to forbid some things. Some things the utopia forbids are people riding bikes before age. Another forbidden thing is breaking the rules because that means punishment. A big thing that the utopia forbids is falling in love. A person can't fall in love. There are even pills to stop people for falling in love. Jonas had a dream about Fiona, and then when he took the pill, the feelings were gone.

Failed Utopias

Lowry combined aspects of failed utopias. For one, they had similarities, such as strict rules and adopted children. Lowry made the utopia in the Giver the opposite of the failed utopias. Lowry made sure everyone would work together, that no one was weighed higher than the others, and that everyone is important. Yes the utopia Jonas lives in can survive because of all the traits Lowry included in the utopia. The utopia works together, dismisses any bad people, and carries the community as one.

The Receiver's House

The Receiver's house is different from the others because (1) there is more comfortable furniture
(2) there are locked doors (3) the speaker can be turned on and off anytime wanted. The reason for these differences is because the Receiver must concentrate and must not be disturbed in order to do their jobs. The Receiver needs severe concentration in order to transmit memories to one another.

The process of transmitting memories is to use the Capacity to See Beyond. The Giver transmitted his memories to Jonas, who used the Capacity to See Beyond since Jonas's eyes were closed but he could still see very clearly.

What Jonas said means confusion. Beyond that, it means that Jonas doesn't know any history. He didn't know that there were other people, and there was a time before himself. He doesn't know what generations are. But he will soon. This is not a great way to live since it is practically restricted to know about the past. It's not right.

He is surprised when the door is locked because there are no locked doors in the Community. He is surprised when the speaker is turned off because first of all, Jonas has never seen an off sign before, and secondly, there aren't any other off signs in the whole entire Community.

The Giver is a significant title because The Giver is the name of the past Receiver of Memory since Jonas is the present Receiver of Memory and it is possible when the future Receiver of Memory, possibly Gabriel, Jonas will take a name as The Giver since maybe the past Giver before the present Giver was also The Giver so The Giver could actually be a name or position of a retired Receiver. The book is all about The Giver and Jonas going through memories together. Significant.
