The first time I heard about COVID was on the news about Wuhan in China were the first case was documented. It looked so scary because all of a sudden people fell on the floor or even died for no reason. It’s super contagious, it transfers so badly and fast. So school got cancelled and everybody started quarantine in Wuhan. In the beginning only China was under lockdown, but then the it transferred to the U.S. so it’s closer and closer to us.
Do you see any racism or inequalities due to COVID?
Definitely because after some political leaders made racist comments, people started pointing fingers and hating toward Asian Americans. People started attacking all Asian people just on the street so people started doing parades for Stop Asian Hate.

Before COVID started I was in 11th grade, and I didn’t know what college I would be going to. Now I’m accepted into Wake Forest for tennis and I’ll be playing on the college tennis team. Wake Forest is a D1 school in North Carolina and the best thing about it is that it’s a small university with the opportunities of a big university.
What have you been doing during quarantine?
I have been playing tennis and basketball. I just won 1000 dollars from my Men’s Open Tournament. To start off, I used to go to China to visit my relatives every summer, but I couldn’t go for the summer of 2020 or 2021🇨🇳. This is really disappointing because I always have so much fun there! I get to see my family and friends, and eat delicious food🍜. So instead of going to China for the whole summer, I’m going to play tennis everyday and go to the beach🏖. But many high level tennis tournaments got cancelled and there hasn’t been doubles play for a whole year. Another big event that got cancelled is a singing and dancing show that I was going to attend last year in February. It’s a annual show that my mom and her friends would participate in and dance for the Chinese Association. Lastly, I haven’t been to the movie theaters for almost 2 years and the movies that we’re going to release were held back. My old routine was to watch YouTube and Tiktok until midnight. I would skip breakfast and eat very little for lunch, but in the afternoon I had to play tennis so I wouldn’t have enough energy. Now I sleep before 10:30 every night to get at least 8:30 hours of sleep every night. This past year, I went to the beach very often and watched movies at home with my mom. I joined the high school varsity this year and it has been great. Even though I’m a middle schooler playing high school, I haven’t lost a match this season. One week ago we drove the school bus to Orlando and played against other school. Without losing a match, our AHS team got the title of State Champs this year. Outside of school, playing a tournaments every other week has made me improve myself faster. School is also a big part of my life so I have to balance it with my extra curriculares. Because I’m going to high school next year, I’m trying to maintain good grades for the rest of the semester. I do my homework as early as I can and study for my tests so I can do other activities for the rest of the day. As for fun, I also made some new friends and I have been hangout with them every week. I have been going to the beach and mall every month with my mom to spend time together. We also got Netflix in the beginning of quarantine and we watch a movie or show every week.
