Rome controlled so much of the Mediterranean part of the world because it had the most extensive social and political structure. Great leaders such as Julius Caesar and Claudius built up the Roman military strength to help conquer other civilizations and because of its location close to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The civilization was so large it eventually was split into Western and Eastern empires. The Roman empire started in 27 BCE and the Western empire fell in 476CE and the Eastern empire fell in 1453 CE. The different languages used in 33 CE were Galileans, Parthians, Medes, Aramaic, Elamites, Residents of: Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia’s native languages. Along with Egyptian, Cyrene, Greek, Rome and other languages different societies spoke. Different ethnic/ cultural groups living in the different regions are Gentiles, Gentile Christians, Jews, Jewish Christians, Children of Abraham, Hebrews, Israelites, Galileans, Palestians, Israelis, Pagans and Samaritans. Romans travelled and transported goods along the silk road trade route, different roads connected to the city and ships. The rich were carried by slaves along the roads whereas the military force rode on horse. Main religions in the time of 33CE was Judaism with most religions being pagan and the main cities were Rome, Jerusalem and Antioch.

The significance of the conversion of Saul of Tarsus is that he changes from a critic and persecutor of Christianity to a Jesus lover and a spreader of the word. During his conversion, a bright light came to him, blinding him and told him that he has to do Gods word. After the bright light had visited him, Jesus became the centre of his life and all that he did was a reflection of how Jesus lived his life.

Post 4 - Explain the purpose of Paul's letters and identify the main messages in his preaching

The purpose of Pauls letters is to spread the message of Jesus and to teach everyone receiving the letter how to live as Jesus did. He writes 13 letters in total (Romans, 2 letters to the Corithians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 2 letters to the Thessalonians, Hebrews, 2 letters to Timothy, Titus and Philemon) and are able to be found in the new testament of the Bible. One of his main messages was that Christians were bonded with Christ through their faith. He shows that Christians are dependant on Christ to nourish the belief in the faith. Another one of Pauls key messages is that Paul believes that God justifies and that wrong doings can only be made right by Gods forgiveness

Cultural challenges for Paul revealed in his epistles were the Romans putting him into jail and a language barrier. As stated in the bible the Romans threw Paul into jail because he was trying to spread the word on Christianity. This post-poned his plans by 1 year as he was in isolation because the romans culture of Judaism and not supporting Christianity. Another cultural challenge would be a language barrier between Paul and the people he wanted to convert. As stated in Post 1 several languages were spoken around the world and even though he was a well-educated man, he wouldn’t be bi-lingual to the point of speaking several languages.

1 Corinthians 12:4-7 ‘Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.’ This message tells us that there are a variety of material things and material gods but only one true God. It applies to us today when people worship things other than our one true God like science, wealth or power.
