This book demonstrates the importance of voting from the eyes of a 100 year old woman who finally has her first opportunity to cast her vote. This novel explores the passage of the 15th amendment and memories of her parents registering to vote their first time. This book is a great resource for teachers and students to expand upon the fact that the democratic and voting process is so important because not everyone has always been afforded that right.

For a guest speaker, invite a local police officer to visit class one day and discuss the importance of the democratic process. Ask them to talk with students about how it locally effects them and the citizens around them. This is a great choice of a guess speaker because it builds trust, reliability, and a sense of responsibility in students. This builds these traits because, by seeing an official they could see on the street anyday gives them a real world view.
