Many Native Americans lived close to the Quinnequktuqut. These Native Americans invited people from the Massachusetts colony to let them settle in the area. In return for this, they wanted the colony to protect them from other Native American Tribes. This did not work well. They were often at war with each other and some were even forced into slavery.

The first written constitution in the world was made in Connecticut. It was called the Fundamental Orders. This called for a "based consent of the governed" which was very rare for this time. It had representatives for each town. Each town also had 6 magistrates and a governor elected by free white men.

According to Connecticut's climate and geography the winters are cold, much colder than English winters. And the summers were mild.

The terrain was hilly, mountainous, covered with forests. The soil was useful for farming and the colonists along the coast depended on the sea ot live through fishing, whaling, and trading.

The most common crops that were grown were corn, pumpkins, beans, squash, and apples. They grew cows for their beef and milk.

Most colonists followed the Puritan religion since most of them came from Puritan communities. Even though many left Europe for religious freedom, they didn't tolerate or accept any other religions.

These colonists made sure to separate their religious codes from their colonial laws, more completely than colonists in Massachusetts. They were strongly opposed to sensual pleasure and were strong advocates of propriety (appropriateness).
