Directions: Find scholarly resources on visual rhetoric (and from your notes from last year) and write down ALL the terms (with definitions that apply to advertising) you can use to analyze an advertisement. *Literary Devices covers all terms like "metaphorical" or "ironic" or "tone" etc.

From our research, we have found that the Stratocuiser came out in 1945, which was at the end of WWII and the start of the Cold War. The advertisement, while it held the purpose of selling tickets to ride the plane, gives a carefree view of what the Stratocruiser would supposedly provide since tensions were high in the political sphere in the US, as opposed to other countries. The audience of this ad would cater to the wealthy because it's a picture of the "Luxurious lower deck" area of the plane, which would be assumed to cost more than an average ticket. The speaker displays a convincing argument as to why buying the product is worth people's money.

While America was not directly involved, President Reagan still intervened supporting Baghdad. A year later, in Operation Praying Mantis we would strike Iran. The purpose of this ad is to help get the young generations invested in mechanics and the air force to help boost their armed forces. The ad targets all mechanics as the ad stated they would train them as needed. Regarding the kairos, the Air Force was heavily utilized in the Iran-Iraq war and Operation Praying Mantis so there was not a more opportune time to promote the air force.

This era showed the peak of American culture. Military movies such as Forrest Gump and classic American sitcoms such Friends were released. America was involved in the Bosnian War, the Rwandan Civil War, etc. There was a large emphasis on America's troops and their heroic nature. Following the Vietnam War, the military was not viewed in a positive light, however, around 1994, America's view of troops began to become better.

The ad itself tries to cater to women and promote good housekeeping. It promotes good housekeeping by having the woman look up and smile while wearing the gloves. This creates a positive mood because she is looking in the direction of the price, which is only 10 cents, and that further makes consumers want to buy it because of its cheapness. The smile on her face also creates a positive mood around the traditional gender roles for women, because society was in the middle of the second wave feminism, where traditional gender roles were being opposed.

The ad was created in 1972 for a cassette tape. It features a Stevie Nicks lookalike, who is a vocalist for Fleetwood Mac. They were a group on the rise and found most of their commercial success later that decade.

The mood is almost seductive on first glance, using black and white and a pretty woman. But it juxtaposes with the words on the ad, which uses Pandora's box as a metaphor for a bad product. It promotes that brand by saying there would be no surprises or less than quality product. Also, something present that was very common in advertisements in the 20th century, there is a lot of text. Moving into the 21st century, paragraphs of text have become nonexistent, but it was the norm to have lots of reading before then.

Cassettes were less than a decade old in '72, but were exponentially gaining popularity. Even so, to keep up with the market that vinyls had cornered for decades, ads for cassettes were still necessary.

We can assume that the target audience is younger, given the use of an attractive young woman. Not only is a woman on the poster, but she is the main focus, with the cassette shown at the bottom. But the use of an ancient myth in the text, and even the box 'tattoo' on her arm would have been a move to pull in an older audience who would be more familiar with the myth but perhaps less familiar with new technology.

The traditional label of domestic women was being challenged. High patriotism called for women to adopt different roles no longer just "mother". Women sought out careers and contributed to consumerism. And when women began to branch out, they still continue to follow previously established feminine beauty standards. Appearance remained a high priority.

During this time, it was almost exactly a year after the tragedy of 911 and the start of the Iraq War. Women had gotten used to the "working lifestyle" and were attempting to rejuvenate their feminine side. This advertisement was created in attempt to help women tap back into their appearance. This idea led to the start of women showing more skin and embracing their own personal styles, while still being working women.

Through research and examination of the ads elements such as the black and white color, pricing, formatting fonts, and hairstyle we can infer that this ad takes place in the 1970s. During this time period, the American economy was booming and product adverting was becoming very popular. The idolization of having a slim body, specifically for women, created unhealthy eating habits. With this context in mind, the ad shows a slim body woman to help persuade possible consumers to buy the product to achieve this ideal "natural" body. The ad statement, "Now! Lose weight the way Nature intended you to!", is placed to manipulate the audience.
