Flossie, Violet's best friend, had died 2 years ago of influenza and Violet saw blood coming out of her nose and ears. We learned of Violet's older brother, Stephan but are still curious. Chloe is in New York as a New woman, she voted and chooses not to be married Chloe wants violet to go to college one day. Violet tries to be polite and Mrs. Renwick tells her that women can't be doctors or reporters but get married and have children. She also saw a man who grabbed her arm and told her to dance with him. But he smelt like alcohol (which was illegal back then). She ran away from the man and slipped in horse poop. A short girl, Myrtle, helped her up and dusted off Violet's dress. The man stood up as if Myrtle and Violet were ladies. They asked him if he had seen Chloe. The man dropped his book in surprise. Chloe wasn't in New York but in Washington, D.C. She went a year ago to work with the national women's party. Tears swelled in Violet's eyes. We learned that the man was a suffragist. and fully supported Chloe. Eventually, the man got suspicious and asked Myrtle and Violet where their parents were. The two panicked, but then a woman called for help from the man, and Violet and Myrtle escaped. They headed to the train station

This means riding a train without paying. They rode on a train on a dirty platform and they had to sleep outside. In the end, they make it to Washington, DC and they realize Hobie was a great guy and not what it seemed. The theme is don't judge a book by its cover. At first, Violet and Myrtle think Hobie is a sketch. Eventually, they got to The Cameron house and met Mrs. Dexter, Lucy Burns, and Alice Paul. All of those women were suffragists, but Mrs. Dexter was NOT in favor of helping Myrtle because she is "colored" and argues about it with the other women once Mrtle and Violet are bathed and robed. Myrtle and Violet found out Chloe went to Tennessee for an important meeting. She also realizes that the woman who pinned red roses to her on the train station was an anti and she was staying in an anti room. She finds out she can eat sandwiches if she goes to the Anti's meeting. As she listens to them speak, she learns how they are getting men to change their minds about voting on the Susan B. When they reached the fourth one Myrtle told him she wanted to eat in the alley because she was getting very hungry. They kept looking for hotels but all of them told them to leave. Soon they got to a hotel that said they don't take anyone but white men. They said it's because they are trying to keep the place decent, but the hotel was nasty. The furniture was worn out and ciggarettes were on the floor. But the man at the counter told him a place they could stay. it was called Dead horse Alley. Meanwhile, at Max Bloomsteins pharmacy with Chloe, Violet felt like she was dressed like a baby in a fluffy white dress with a violet sash and itchy stockings and uncomfortable shoes called Mary Janes that were uncomfortable. She told Chloe everything that had happened in the past 24 hours. Violet also showed her pamphlets that she was supposed to pass out at the train station that afternoon. Later on, Mr. Martin and Myrtle walk into the pharmacy. Chloe seemed happy to see him. She didn't seem like she wanted to send Mr. Martin to the rightabout. Mr. Martin started causing a scene. He started yelling at Chloe for having to take a legislator to the movies. Violet just wished he would remember he was supposed to be in hiding.
