My group talked about introducing important math language like we do with "heart words" in literacy. When given specific importance, students internalize them and and more likely to use them in their own reasoning and explanations. We could hang them somewhere in the room too!

I will have the students do more of the talking around the situation in the problem and I will guide them through the three reads.

I think the sentence stems are so helpful! So many times kiddos are stcuk before they start because they don't know where to start. The discussion Supports sentence stems gives them a place to start and a how to explain their reasoning.

This learning today affirmed a lot of what we are doing: moving through the act it out routine towards drawings and representations instead of physical kid's bodies, using sentence stems to help with discussions, etc. A next step is creating a math vocabulary space for both vocab and sentence stems to capture our learning.

We use the 3 Reads, I've passed out the Discussion Supports to all the students. Now I want to combine the Compare and Connect with the Discussion Supports. I need to be more intentional using the Discussion Supports. I'm thinking I might try to write out the sentence stems and post them as an anchor for the students.

The poster Christi created and the discussion stems would be great to have at the boards while students are working. I think that I would have a focus of: use a sentence stem from _______ to help your explanation.

To provide structure when students are modeling, students can number their boards with the modeling step they are showing so when students are comparing and connecting their math work, they can clearly see what others are doing.

I am going to post the sentence stems at each board. This will help give a starting point. I already had a reading routine for word problems, but will adjust so there is a school norm. Putting this all together could help the students transition from verbal/picture to written response.

Sharing your thinking orally and sentence stems are such great tools to help students navigate the challenges of written responses. Especially in helping them be able to articulate their mathmatical thinking.
