Similar situation as the demo here -- it was with a parent that wanted me to give their student an extension. I basically referred them to the application and discussed it with Londa. I didn't have any problem denying them an extension because the student didn't show any kind of initiative all semester or make any attempt to contact me for help.

I had a mentor and a parent threaten to get me fired if I didn't let a student (with 12% and no log in data for 4 months) have an extra month to get an A.
I was able to show them the criteria while meeting online in Adobe Connect and pulled up all of the student's records, and the mother admitted that no one was making her work. I suggested maybe a re-enrollment in the next (summer) term now that the student had a better idea of what to expect in an online class. They did enroll her, and she was able to do decently well.

I have only had one student request an extension. I think it was last semester. She asked for an extension after the course had ended. She said she had discussed it with her mentor. I contacted the mentor and the the mentor had no idea what I was talking about. I explained to her I was unable to grant the student the extension because she did not qualify and the mentor understood. I communicated this with the student and then that was it. It was a pretty easy process.

My experiences have been similar to the skit-- kids, mentors or parents begging for extensions when the student has done little to no work. I always struggle with wanting them to have an opportunity to squeak by, but have to remind myself that I don't really want anyone to just squeak by--I want to see their best effort.

I haven't had too many negative experiences with extension requests. I had one last year that Shannon had to approve, but it all ended up working out. I haven't had any requests so far this semester, but I also have seniors, so most of them already had to have their final grade submitted.

Betsy: This spring I haven't had any extension requests but normally school senior end dates are pretty firm and when the date comes that's it. Mentors want grades posted for this students ASAP. This spring though many times I've tried to verify due date firmness as students were working to catch up or raise grades with time running out only to have their mentors allow them to work until the MVS semester end date or some earlier date that is quite a bit beyond the original senior due date. It's been strange to have this change in how mentors are handling due dates but the students have been been mostly taking advantage of the extra time to finally get their acts together.
