To me, one of the things that resonates to me is the idea of radical collaboration. As a musician and music educator, there is a degree of black and white or right note vs. wrong note. To take students to a different level of performance and to bring new meaning to what they do, feedback from peers and other experts is paramount. It is what will ultimately make them perform with artistry rather than play the ink on the page.

This is my first year having a class of 8th grade students every day. I want to make sure I give them time to individually practice but also maximize the amount of time that we have together to hear each other's parts and progress. I plan to start using Flipgrid as a means to open a digital feedback loop with me initially and eventually, open it up to include other students.

The idea of collaboration is not foreign or scary to me. Using new technology effectively, however, AND including middle schoolers is a little daunting. I'm hopeful that they take the exercise seriously and consider ways to improve their performance with an audience that may bring an attitude to the table with more scrutiny (but are hopefully still kind).

I have the ability to affect change and have a positive impact on the world. This is what i have taken away from this class today. Our students need to be taught how to learn for themselves. As educators we need to empathize with the children in our class and get to know them...genuinely, get to know them by reading their body language, really listening to what they have to say and making them feel cared for and worthy. This opens the door to education and creative thinking.

Some important points I gathered from these readings include the importance of design thinking and how it aids to develop resiliency, a trusting relationship with failure and risk taking. I see this in the FL classroom and I agree about its importance. The techniques described are applicable to the foreign language classroom where I can incorporate project based learning strategies to engage students in inquiry and meaningful explorations. I can also use these techniques for book characters they are reading. This challenges me to think of ways students can create something that doesn’t exist using design thinking, while I remain in curriculum confines.

I think one of the biggest benefits of design thinking is building and capitalizing on student confidence in their own ability to problem solve (self-efficacy), regardless of their past academic "successes". I think this model is especially important to implement at younger ages, possibly early middle school when students start to lose their passion for just learning and start comparing themselves to others. As a counselor, I see this loss of confidence/concern for peer reaction as one of the biggest deterrents to student engagement.

The concept of bridging an idea of education that was meant for the student and the community as observed by that student and community stood out to me.

Students often fall into the habit of thinking that this discipline or this topic within the discipline will never apply to them. Or conversely, that they'll just follow suit, without seeing the connection, without an internal drive toward a particular goal beyond 'following the rules' Students and long-term learners have the capability to change the world, it is within their reach, and if they are guided toward understanding what to do and how to get answers for what they don't know or even having like-minds to bounce ideas on.

STEM projects and Science Fairs are terrific, but they don't always lead students to trust their own judgement for what to explore or how to navigate the fields, which limits their reach.

It's important for students to have opportunity to learn from their own driven thinking.
