Schools are permitted to extend the amount of time allotted to students for the completion of assessments. It is up to the principal to determine how much time students should be given, but it is recommended that principals consult with the students' teachers when determining what a reasonable amount of time to complete the assessment should be. An example of a possible time extension would be "time and a half."

Sometimes the classroom does not provide the optimal environment for students to complete assessments. The other students in the room can easily become distracting for a student who is trying to focus. Students should take assessments in an optimal testing environment. For some students that might mean completing an assessment in a small group or individually in a location without other students around.

Although New York State offers assessments translated in different languages, not every assessment is offered in a translated version in all languages. In languages that are less commonly spoken around the state, students are permitted to use an oral translation. To use an oral translation, a translator must directly translate the English version of the assessment and they must not provide any additional clarifications or explanations. The translator is able to recieve a copy of the assessment an hour before the assessment is to be given to prepare.
