         <description><![CDATA[<div>Having newcomer families become more involved in the community is so important because they open themselves up to more opportunities. By having their family involved, it sets an example to the students that it's ok to step out of their comfort zone and what they're familiar with because they are supported and don't have to put behind their previous identity. <br><br>- Welcoming families and parents to assemblies and school performances<br><br>- Invite families to share their culture or give a small talk to the students in the class for more exposure (all families, not just newcomer families)<br><br>- Multicultural Week</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This document made my TCDSB is a great resources for those that have ELL students and newcomer families in the classroom. It goes into detail about everything from what and what not to do, to signs that we should look out for to see if our student is having adjustment difficulty. <br><br>The following were some key points that stood out to me:<br><br>- Consider pairing each newcomer student with a peer helper, or older student,that can help them adjust to routines during class periods as well as during recess. (Page 4)<br><br>- Allow the student to leave the classroom to go to a quiet supervised space if feeling overwhelmed. (Page 6)<br><br>- Give the student choices. A sense of control will help them feel safe and empower them to feel con dent in their work and activities. (Page 6)<br><br>- All students benefit from learning social-emotional skills as part of regular instruction, and as situations arise. Those who are more vulnerable need a “higher dose” of instruction in these areas, and reminders about how and when to apply these skills. (Page 7)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Its problematic when you have an ELL student in your classroom because you want to make sure that the students are comfortable and able to be successful, but its even more so when this student is one that requires special needs. <br><br>- If the student is in the ELL/ELD program, ask a special education teacher about different strategies that can be used to help students.<br><br>- Based on previous experience, one of my students had no EA and no support, so what I did was give some desk work to that student while I get the rest of the class started on what they had to do. After the class was settled, I would work with that student one - to - one.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Although this resource wasn't didn't originate from Ontario, I think it can really apply to any students in general. There are many links and supports that guides you through how to establish a welcoming classroom for ELL students as well as how to integrate technology into your lesson plan. There is even a section for families that answers any questions parents might have or when they're looking for extra assistance.<br><br>With regards to ELL students that also have special needs, here are some of the strategies that I found useful from the website:<br><br>- Parents are a valuable advocate for their child. It helps the teacher understand the social economic and linguistic background in which the student is coming from and how to further assist in terms of teaching their child.<br><br>- Early intervention and support so that they can work towards the problem sooner rather than later. This can avoid providing the wrong kind of support for the student. Some examples include clinical teaching, peer and expert consultation and teacher assistance teams.<br><br>- Clinical teaching:  </div>]]></description>
