Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

If a child is well taken care of and comes from a caring loving family the infant will gain trust. If they are neglected as an infant they will view the world as unsafe and therefore mistrust.

I was warmly cared for as an infant. Both my parents and sister loved and cared for me, including outside family. I was well taken care of, and I felt very safe when I was with my family because I knew they would protect me. As stated in our textbook, “when the balance of care is sympathetic and loving, the psychological conflict of the first year—basic trust versus mistrust—is resolved on the positive side”.

Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

A child should be able to use their mental and motor skills to have a sense of independence, make choices and learn from those choices. A child who is unable to experience this feel shame, often doubts themselves, and in the future will be unable to make decisions for themselves.

Because of my little brother and our year difference, I was taught to walk and potty-trained very young so that my mom wouldn't have to struggle as much. By doing so, I gained a sense of independence in where I wanted to walk, what I wanted to play and when I had to use the restroom instead of relying on someone else to do it for me. My parents provided me with “suitable guidance and reasonable choices” to prepare me to be autonomous.

Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt

Children can develop an insight into who they are and who they want to become through make-believe play and if there is parent support, the child gains the initiative to support those beliefs. However, if the child experiences too much self-control by the parent’s demand, the child experiences disapproval and feels guilt.

I remember having a baby doll that was gifted to me. I loved to wear dresses so my mom would try to buy dresses that were the same in my size and for my doll who I believed I was responsible for caring for. My parents supported my make-believe play and began to gift me other caring supplies like bottles and diapers to care for "my baby". Because of this experience, I gained "a sense of ambition and responsibility", the value of caring for others, and might be what led me to want to become a teacher and maybe someday a mom.

Learning to work and cooperate well with others brings success, however, when a child develops negative experiences whether that is at home, school, caring center, or with others, they begin to feel inferior.

When I began school, I knew absolutely no English, however thanks to my family and teachers I was able to overcome that struggle and build my confidence. As the textbook said, "In cultures everywhere, adults respond to children’s improved physical and cognitive capacities by making new demands, and children are ready to benefit from those challenges”. Along the way, I made life-long friends who also shared similar struggles. Throughout my years in school, I valued my education deeply because I knew it was needed to live a happy lifestyle.

When a person is true to themselves and explores vocational goals and values, they form their own identity. However, when a person fails to do so, they have a weak sense of themselves and are unsure of who they are and what they want to become.

At first, I didn’t know what I wanted to pursue and was indecisive. Now I know I want to pursue Elementary Education and go to IUSB. Thanks to volunteering at BGC and shadowing teachers, I know where my vocation is and who I want to become. I also know that what I think now might change as our textbook states, "identity continues to be refined in adulthood as people reevaluate earlier commitments and choices".

Intimate and healthy relationships are essential in a person’s life. If a person does not have intimate relationships or healthy relationships, that person might experience loneliness and isolation.

The thought of being alone, not being able to "form close bonds and remain isolated” scares me. I hope to be in a healthy relationship once I have my career where I am loved and cared for. I want to be able to marry and become a mother like I thought I was when I was younger.

Being a generative adult means making positive change by caring for others whether it is through child-rearing pr productive work. Isolating from others, having poor relationships, and being selfish are ways to feel stagnation.

If I become a teacher and a mother I know I will feel accomplished. Ever since I can remember I knew I wanted to care for people one way or another and "giving to the next generation" will help me accomplish my life goals.

I hope to pass on my wisdom and stories to my students, children, and even grandchildren. And I hope to live a long happy life with those I love so that I can be able to tell them “that life was worth living as it happened”.
