Social media networks designed for sharing whereabouts with family and/or friends such as Foursquare, and Gowalla pose a threat to safety. Facebook announced that a new feature is being introduced soon where users can share their location when they create a new status. Consumer privacy is being compromised because of this and congressional hearings were held to create laws which limit the amount of information advertisers can receive when using these mobile social networks.

The rise of those two online marketing trends that create deceiving effective advertising campaigns, adapted in just a fraction of a second to a web surfer's household income, interests and online activity, may not be a real surprise. But privacy activists say that they go too far and that advertisers are unfairly tracking people and profiting from their data. Companies combine details of peoples online lives with information from previously unconnected offline databases without them knowing and without their permission. So basically companies use ads and get you to click on them and they have hidden trackers and block scripts that get your information.
