Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) Description

The word atrial refers to the atrium of the heart. Atria take blood into the heart from both the lungs (left atrium) and the body (right atrium). Septal refers to the septum, which separates the right and left side of the hearts. Arial Septal Defect is a hole in the heart between the atria. The blood in the left atrium has a higher pressure than the blood in the right atrium, which causes some blood to go into the right atrium from the left atrium. The heart has to pump more blood from the right atrium, making it work harder. There are three types of ASD. Secundum defect, the most common type, is a hole in the middle of the atrial septum. Primum defect is a hole in the lower part of the septum. The mitral valve may also be affected and blood may leak. Sinus venosus defect, the least common type, is a hole at the top of the septum. The pulmonary artery may also be affected.

ASD can be diagnosed. A doctor can use a stethoscope to hear the abnormal heart beat. The heart murmur or irregular heart beat is caused by the sound of the extra blood moving through
the right side of the heart and the pulmonary artery. Large or untreated holes may have symptoms, but it is possible to have little to no symptoms. Symptoms include: frequent respiratory or lung infections, difficulty breathing, tiring when feeding in infants, shortness of breath when being active or exercising, swelling of legs, feet, or stomach are, and stroke.

Most atrial septal defects happen randomly and seem to have no clear cause. There may be a genetic component. There may be a defect in a gene or chromosome. Something in the environment may be causing families to have heart problems more frequently.

ASD can close by itself over time. In that case, doctors will monitor ASD because they want to know it is closing and not affecting the person's health. There are two treatment hearts: open heart surgery and catheter intervention. Open heart surgery is used to close the hole in the heart. During the surgery, the heart will need to be stopped and opened to repair it. A machine called the heart bypass machine will take place of the heart during the surgery. A catheter is a tube. The tube is passed through a vein into the heart and the hole is closed by inserting a device through it. When the tube is
withdrawn, the device opens and closes the hole.

ASD may be diagnosed before pregnancy. There are screenings during pregnancy that may show the presence of ASD. Ultrasounds can be used to diagnose the defect. Fetal echocardiograms can be used. A fetal echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the baby’s heart which shows more detail than the routine prenatal ultrasound test.
