"Oh, war, I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives
War means tears to thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives"
This section is really powerful, pulling at the heartstrings of mothers especially, carrying a lot of emotion within it. It allows the listener to imagine the pain the mother feels when she looses her son.
"War.. What is it good for?"
This restated phrase throughout the song gives the listener a chance to ask themselves to ask what war really does and if it brings us closer together or further apart. In this case, the Vietnam War created gaps between us.
"Ain't nothing but a heartbreaker"
When Sarr says that the war is a hearbresaker, he means that with all the death and innocent lives lost for no reaosn.
"life is too precious to spend fighting wars each day, war can't give life, it can only take it away." As we sent hundreds of thousands of lives over eight thousand miles away, the did return, but most returned in body bags and innocent lives we lost where most teen boys died right out of high school, where most didn't get to experience certain joys in their lives.
"They say we must fight to keep our freedom, but Lord knows there's a better way."
We think that going to war will show the amount of power we have, and that in the end we will get more out of the war than what we put in, but in this case the Vietnam War did no such thing and it only caused more problems for the people. There are many other ways to resolve issues that cause these wars.

Edwin Starr was born in 1942. The song War became one of his greatest hits of all time, along with other protest songs he wrote. He wrote War because he had first hand experience from serving in the Vietnam War for two years, where he deemed the war as pointless. He used the success from his song to criticism American Foreign policy.

This song discusses the social issues that came up during the war. One thing that the song addresses is the younger generation didn't support the war because they were fighting for "Peace, love and understanding". At the beginning of the war the people stood with the war efforts, but as the war continued and nothing seemed to be getting better the people lost hope. Protests started to happen more and more and the people started to speak out about how they really felt and their own concerns regarding the war.

The is a disabled veteran at the Vietnam memorial. This is a good representation for the song because in the song it says "Oh, war, has shattered many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean". Which is mentioning the fact that many vets came back with some kind of disability or they died in the war.

Song from Our Generation

This song is about learning to accept yourself and others because it was how you were born. This has been large issue for our generation and many people are working to accept others no matter their race, religion, or sexual orientation. For Example in 2011 gay mirage was still illegal in the United States. People all around the country fought for the laws to be changed to accept all people.
