With this method, students are placed in the mainstream classroom, but are pulled out for a portion of the day to receive ESL instruction. This method is most commonly used at the elementary level and is timed based on the student's level of English proficiency.

ESL Class Period

ESL Resource Center

ESL Self-Contained

ESL Team Teaching

Structured English Immersion

Get to Know your Students

Doing research about the students (who they are, their background, and cultural practices) helps them feel more motivated since you are showing them you care about them. This could also help the student become more confident and open to learning new concepts.

Speak Slowly and Clearly

Be more aware of your enunciation and allow students a couple more seconds to respond. These extra seconds allow the student to feel less pressured (since they may already feel stressed) and come up with a better elaborated response.

Use lots of Visual Aids

Many students can be visual learners, so having anchor charts or posters around the room can tremendously help improve comprehension. Writing instructions/concepts on the board can also be extremely beneficial.

Build in Group Work

Communicate Effectively

When sending notes home, send them in the child's native language. For example, when scheduling a parent-teacher conference, send a note explaining the conference's purpose since the families may think their child is in trouble.

Let Them Know Their Rights

Encourage Parents to Volunteer
